  • Shepherd’s hut with stunning Devon views 15 minutes’ drive from Exeter
  • Dartmoor National Park 20 minutes’ drive; Exmouth Beach half an hour
  • Handcrafted high-quality accommodation; private garden with firepit
After a front-row view of Devon’s verdant hills? Introducing Val and Time, a bijou site with accommodation in a rather swish, handcrafted shepherd’s hut. At 20 minutes’ walk from the village of Ide and 15 minutes by car outside Exeter, you’ll have this bijou place all to yourselves – and be in pole position to enjoy those far-reaching rural vistas. Inside, you’ll find a comfy double bed with lots of storage underneath, a small dining area and a top-quality handmade kitchen with an oak worktop, Belfast sink and all essentials like crockery, cutlery, tea and coffee. There’s engineered oak flooring for a cosy ambiance and a table for two for relaxed indoor dining. The stylish bathroom has a Victorian-style loo, basin and a good-sized tiled shower, heated towel rail and complimentary toiletries. There’s a slightly quirky décor throughout, along with wall hangings and indoor plants. Step outside and it gets even better; the hut has a large and private garden with dedicated parking on a gravel driveway. Wooden seating and your own firepit (a net of complimentary logs is provided to get you started) are made for long chats, a glass of something iced and a bit of stargazing when conditions are right – and if you want to have an evening wander, there are two good pubs in Ide.

Local attractions

Historic Exeter (15 minutes’ drive) deserves a visit for its spectacular Gothic-era cathedral and the fine-art and natural-history collections in the treasure trove that is the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery. If you fancy something a bit different, take a guided tour of Exeter’s underground passages, a labyrinth of medieval tunnels designed to bring water into the city. For a day on the coast, Exmouth Beach (half an hour) is your nearest option. You can have a go at kitesurfing or paddleboarding, play crazy golf on the seafront Esplanade or follow the South West Coast Path to the red sandstone cliffs at Orcombe Point (35 minutes’ walk from Exmouth). Haldon Forest Park (15 minutes’ walk) has easy hikes and cycle rides through woodland and treetop rope courses at Go Ape Haldon. When wild moorland and dramatic craggy tors are more your style, Dartmoor National Park is only 20 minutes’ drive away for days out in bracing air – watch out for the shaggy Dartmoor ponies that graze freely on the moor.
