  • Smart family-run park within Woodbury Common
  • Easy drive into Exeter
  • Excellent facilities including bar, bistro and play area
They say an Englishman’s (motor)home is his castle – so when choosing where to brake, you’ll want a spot fit for a king. Castle Brake Holiday Park in east Devon should pass muster: it’s a smart, family-run park within the heathland of Woodbury Common, ideally placed for an invasion of Exeter and the sought-after sands of the Jurassic Coast. The facilities are splendid: a spotless, cedar-clad amenities block with underfloor heating and family bathrooms; a laundry room; the Castle Inn bar and restaurant for homemade nosh using local ingredients (takeaways are also available); a play area; and ample space for a peaceful stroll and a bit of wildlife spotting. (Please note that the bar and restaurant are not open every evening during low season.) Castle Brake Holiday Park is within half an hour's walk of the village of Woodbury, which has a handful of good pubs and shops, or it’s an easy ride into Exeter for anything else you might need.

Liked: Friendly staff Very nice facilities Restaurant on site was really good

Disliked: Bit of a phone signal blackspot, but had to pay WiFi. As site was o e of the more expensive in area it would have been better if this was included. That's my only gripe though.

Liked: Loved this site. The two ladies in reception were really welcoming and friendly. The site was beautifully maintained and clean. The plots were a good size and the site was very peaceful. Close to Exeter and Exmouth. All the facilities were really good. Toilet/shower block was very clean and plenty of showers and toilet. The best thing was the under floor heating in the shower block. We will definitely be back.

Disliked: Nothing

Fully-serviced gravel touring pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet site. Very helpful friendly staff. We stayed on a fully serviced pitch that was level and good size. The facilities were warm (under floor heating) and clean. The showers were the best design I’ve seen on a campsite! Beautiful walks from the site.

Disliked: Unfortunately, it was obvious in the women’s facilities that it was the end of the busy season (September) Several of the shower cubicles had broken locks and due to a problem with the drains they had an appalling smell. I reported this to reception and was told that the locks would be seen to and the drainage problem would be addressed over the winter. Hopefully it will be sorted before we no doubt return next year!

Fully-serviced gravel touring pitch

Liked: site is very clean and staff helpfull, pitches are level shower and toilets are a bit of a walk if your up near the entrance (which we were) also club bar/restaurant is small and for the size of the site with well over 100 statics i would not like to be here in the height of the season, nice walk to the local village woodbury, we would return but out of season dates

Disliked: small bar/restaurant area but then it does have one

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for sharing your feedback, Michael C, we love to hear you found the site to be very clean and the staff to be helpful. We are so pleased that you would recommend us, and when you come and stay again, do keep in mind that you can request a lower pitch area . You can be reassured, although we have under 50 static holiday caravans on the park, that even in the height of the season, Castle Brake is still a relaxing woodland holiday place to stay. Kind Regards The Castle Brake Team

Fully-serviced gravel touring pitch

Liked: We had a good week here. The site was nice, quiet and clean sitea mixture of touring and statics. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Food and drinks lovely in the site bar we enjoyed the quiz night even though we came last! Very well placed for getting out and visiting places around south Devon.

Disliked: Our only gripe was with the toilet/shower block which wasn't that clean and had the most awful smell of dirty drains/ sewage which was most unpleasant. I did report this to reception but they didn't seem too interested and there didn't appear to be any improvement. Hence we mostly used our own facilities and the toilet by the bar which was clean. We discovered a large skip full of rubbish behind the toilet block which might account for some of the smell. In our opinion this was the only thing that let the site down.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. Its great to hear you had a good week, it certainly sounds like you got out and about visiting places around South Devon, and well done on taking part in the quiz night at The Castle Inn! We will pass on your feedback/photos regarding the toilet/shower block and smell to our relevant teams for consideration. We do hope to see you again in 2025. Kind Regards The Castle Brake Team

Local attractions

Six miles from Castle Brake Holiday Park are the red cliffs of Budleigh Salterton and the family-friendly sands of Exmouth, gateways to the glories of the Jurassic Coast. A little further along the coast is Sidmouth, which features ravishing Regency architecture along its sweeping esplanade. Whether you’re a culture hound or an outdoorsy creature, there’s plenty to do within easy reach: exit into Exeter, an attractive cathedral city brimming with museums and historic sites, or delve into Dartmoor, for more remote adventures. For splashy and screamy fun, a wilderness woodland, indoor and outdoor adventure play areas, farm animals and more, head to the Crealy Great Adventure Park, a mere four miles up the road from Castle Brake. Or try the World of Country Life, which has a petting zoo, indoor and outdoor rides and slides, vintage steam engines, museums and events as eclectic as welly wanging and the six nations ferret races...
