  • Site surrounded by wild woods with a stream in Dartmoor National Park
  • A quarter of a mile from the Teign River in a wildlife-rich haven
  • An hour's walk through forest and woodland to a couple of pubs
Open-air swims, forest walks and star-spotting – it’s all to play for during a satisfying sojourn at the aptly named Sweet Meadows and Wild Woods Country Holidays in Devon’s Dartmoor National Park. This site is surrounded by leafy greenery and has a stream for paddling, plus it’s a quarter of a mile from the Teign River for proper submerges. The Dunsford Woods nature reserve is the same distance, so bring the binoculars and amble under the boughs of trees while on the lookout for woodpeckers, hawks and swallows, along with deer, foxes and badgers. While here, pick up fallen branches from the forest floor to build a small campfire later on (you can also purchase wood from the park). Feel free to take the pup along too, but please do keep dogs under control while on the site so they don’t chase the park's ponies or cats. Small family members are most welcome to interact with the horses when they’re not playing in the treehouse dens, on the swings or seesaw. And once you’ve tucked them up in bed (the kids that is, not the horses)? Don’t forget to look up – the stars give off a spectacular show when the conditions are spot-on in this area of low light pollution. If you’ve got your heart set on a getaway in Dartmoor despite not having a car, it’s no problem – the nearest bus services run from Exeter to Cheriton Bishop or Dunsford, both approximately 2.5 miles from the site, and the owners will arrange to pick you up.

Local attractions

Fancy a pint (or a bite to eat)? Set off on an hour-long walk towards a couple of inns, either through the forest or Dunsford Woods. The cracking café at Castle Drogo – which also has well-kept gardens worth a wander – is within reach on foot in an hour and a half (or 15 minutes’ drive). Divert your attention to more Dartmoor destinations such as Haytor Rocks (35 minutes) and Canonteign Falls (25 minutes), then dawdle in dreamy Dartmeet where the East and West Dart rivers join up. Kids keen on animals? Mosey over to the Miniature Pony Centre, home to a range of donkeys and pigs as well as the equestrian creatures the place is named after. Nippers can also attempt to spot Dartmoor’s famed wild horses out and about while wandering over the national park’s moorlands, valleys and tors.
