Plenty of space for all campers, we never squeeze tents next to each other

  • On a working farm in the north Devon countryside
  • A five-minute drive to Saunton Sands
  • Free hot showers and well-kept amenities
A five-minute drive to Saunton Sands... then back for lashings of free hot water under the shower and settling down on your chosen pitch to spark up a campfire under the north Devon sky... the peeps at Branton's Fairlinch Camping reckon they do a 'classic camping experience' here, and they're surely, definitely, right. Set on a working farm in north Devon coastal countryside, Fairlinch has its camping in an open field that's actively farmed throughout the year and left unmarked so that guests can pick their own pitch (take your time; there are some splendid views). It's a friendly place where the team is always on hand to answer questions or dispense info for guests to get the most out of their hol whatever their tastes (beaches, most likely). The amenities – powerful electric showers and strong flush toilets – are cleanly kept and there's also ice pack freezing or mobile charging if you need it. And – of course – both campfires and barbecues are allowed.

What customers say

Grand value, big views, pitches anywhere on this basic but spacious site. Short spin to Saunton & Croyde. Peaceful spot. Showers & loos decent, if a bit basic. Staff grand. Washing-up area & grass could be better.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Great views on a lovely quiet site. Very spacious with ability to pick your own pitch and be with other groups if you wanted to. Showers were warm and clean.

Disliked A way to dry hands after washing them when using the toilet would be helpful.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The field offers nice views, has bats swooping overhead and was more than half empty (which may or may not be a positive). The showers were hot and free. I got a friendly greeting from young Eva on arrival - despite the lateness of the hour.

Disliked For what you're getting, the cost is high. The showers and toilets are in container units and are a bit rough. Presumably because the bins were at the entrance, there was a rubbish heap near the loos that had overspilled/been scattered by the wind/been scavenged by animals. The rough-mown grass poses a threat to tent floors and inflatable sleeping mats that one expects with wild camping - a full-price campsite should probably do a bit better.

Local attractions

To the beach first, natch: the four magnif sandy surfing beaches of Saunton Sands, Putsborough, Woolacombe and Ilfracombe are all under 15 minutes' drive from Fairlinch Camping, and surf schools are around close by too if you haven't yet dipped a toe in the foam. The two closest villages to Fairlinch are Braunton and Croyde, both with a good choice of shops, pubs and restaurants, and both on the South West Coast Path for hikes among more magnif scenery. More hikes as well as bike rides are at the nearby Tarka Trail, the 180-mile route taken by the eponymous otter; if you're picking it up at Braunton, the 31-mile section between between Braunton and Meeth is level and car-free so should suit all cycling sorts.
