Even the site's lambs are relaxed
Good morning!

  • Small, friendly and dog-friendly family-run site near the Devon coast
  • 15 minutes from Westward Ho! surfing beach
  • Take a boat trip, spot seals and dive off Lundy Island
Clifftop walks and river trips, rockpooling and stargazing, surf beaches and the simple pleasure of cooking up a feast with friends around a firepit… There aren't too many spots where you can tick all those boxes, but it's all there at Treyhill Farm. This comfortable and friendly smallholding is on a hilltop looking onto north Devon's finest countryside, about five minutes' drive from a pub with grub and the banks of the River Torridge. The Treyhill team know what they're about – and that's sorting everything out so you can have a truly comfy and chilled stay in these scenic surrounds. They care about the details: flowers and herbs around the grounds adding scent and colour; fresh tea towels in the washing-up station; secure bike storage for cycling types. Across the cobbled courtyard the shared bathroom is bright, clean and cosy, kitted out with a big hot shower and an armchair. You want to feast alfresco, smelling the salty tang on the breeze mingle with the woodsmoke as you sip a glass of wine? Go ahead, the folks at the farm will supply you with pots, pans, firewood and fire-starting kits… plus recipes if you need some tips on firepit cuisine. And a corkscrew. They're also mines of information on the local area and happy to help. Book ahead and they'll take you on a fish and chip run to Bideford in their boat, or cruise you down the Torridge spotting kingfishers and herons. Canine companions are welcome at Treyhill (and the same goes for the village pub).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Shepards hut, toilet /shower, communication with the host. Tbh they saved my bacon as I turned up late in the day with the weather raining and very windy. I’d booked a pitch for a tent but after the long walk during the day and the weather I was in no fit state to put up even my two man tent. The farm owner made me a cup of tea while I spoke to Natalie to see if I could upgrade to something more substantial. Without hesitation she sorted it with her colleague even though they were not based on site. The shepherds hut was quaint with the rustic feel you would expect with everything you need inside (comfortable bed, two burner gas hob, kettle, small log burner etc). The weather continued to blow a gales but it didn’t matter as the hut was cosy and comfortable. Nice sized room with shower cubicle, toilet and hand basin with plenty of room to get dry and changed. Didn’t get much time to look around too much but in the summer I would think the area I stayed on would be fantastic.

Orchard Beauty bell tent

Liked: Absolutely LOVED this campsite. It was wild and wonderful. My girls aged 3 and 11months could roam and play climb trees say hello to the chickens. Surrounded by lush country side and minutes to a great beach walk. The bell tent was spotless, cosy and comfortable. Can't wait to stay again.

Disliked: Nothing!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely amazing. Loads of room , so quite and everyone is so friendly. Simon that is there was super friendly and let the kids help him walk the dogs and 2 puppys as well as feed the chickens and go on a pig hunt. The farm dogs are lovely my kids loved every bit of it such a safe environment for them. And we loved the camp fire. Our tent fell down one day while we were out (ploe snapped on windy day) and Simon fixed it and taped it up for us such a amazing man. As we didn't get to the camp site till 9pm and it was dark and we have 3 young kids.

Disliked: Nothing everything was great

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Relaxed atmosphere, peaceful, good clean facilities

Disliked: Guests dogs were all kept on leads but the site owners dogs roamed free and got into bin bags. The other campsite guests had to clean up the owners dog poo.

The Bus microlodge

Liked: The views The bus The bed Fellow campers Campsite dogs are fun & friendly The fire pit The decked seating area The location The many boats on site! The pigs The coffee hut

Disliked: Too much dog poo from campsite dogs that should be regularly cleaned up by site owners! Over familiarity of one of the long term on site campers! Composting toilet out of use. The grassed area with the bus should have been private but it was regularly used by others.

Orchard Beauty bell tent

Liked: Friendly, nice and quiet.

Disliked: Mouse droppings in tent, damp bedding. Not all lights worked. Toilets and showers didn't look clean. Not what I expected after reading the advertisement. Advertised cooking facilities and kettle but actually what they offered was hire of a two ring portable hob at extra cost

Local attractions

Between the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Hartland Heritage Coast, this is true walking country. From Instow (10 minutes' drive) you can join the Tarka Trail, a wildlife-packed route inspired by the otter's journey in Henry Williamson's novel. Follow it to Westward Ho! (15 minutes from the site) and cool off in the sea; the farm owners also suggest surfers head here, instead of busier beaches further north. You can take lessons in the art of not falling off various watercraft at the Ultimate Adventure Centre in Bideford (15 minutes), while for further thrills, kayaking, laser tag and assault courses are also on the menu. For gentler times on water, head to the old riverside town of Appledore (15 minutes) for a boat cruise. If you fancy frying a fish over that firepit you can choose between the Torridge and Taw rivers as well as the big briny. Bideford is a popular launch point for sea fishing and for trips to Lundy Island: this wild outcrop in the Atlantic attracts all kinds of adventurers from seal spotters to wreck divers and has spectacular sunsets to round it all off.
