  • 20-acre Devon farm half a mile from a village with good food pub
  • 10 miles from the Dartmoor National Park and the coast
  • Picnic areas, and medieval clubhouse and courtyard
Do you feel like nature is lacking in your life? Rebuild that relationship with a stay at Reforge Retreat, on a 20-acre farm less than 15 minutes’ drive from Beaworthy in Devon, where you can pitch up among meadows, woods and lakes. Reforge Retreat is a top spot for exploration of Devon: bring your bike and head out on the Ruby Way cycle path that passes near the site, or join up with the Tarka Trail which stretches from Meeth to Braunton. You can hike or take to horseback in Dartmoor National Park, 25 minutes away, and there are also plenty of quiet lanes and bridleways nearby where you can walk or bike in peace. Relax back on site in the clubhouse or medieval courtyard, tucking into some snacks in one of the picnic areas, or hanging out by the firepits and gazing at the stars. If your stomach starts complaining, you won’t have to travel far: barbecues are available for hire on site, so you can look after yourself, or if you’re feeling a little lazier – and who could blame you when you’re on your hols – there’s a pub in the village of Black Torrington, a 15-minute walk away, where you can grab some grub and knock back a few local ales and ciders.

Meadow non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Rambling nature of site. Variety of places to explore, and beautiful views. Campers' kitchen provided cooking facilities and a kettle - luxury for a bikepacker! And an undercover place to relax in. Dogs are considered on an individual basis - thank you 🥰 Friendly and helpful, both when booking and on site. Plenty of clean, functional facilities.

Disliked: Not as easy to access from the sustrans route 27 as the map suggests - the area packs a lot of hill into each mile! Easy to find though. And the Ruby Way from highampton is a lovely way to avoid the A3072

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: My 15 year old daughter asked me to leave a really good review for this campsite. Pitchup should put this as one of their recommendations. The host was helpful and friendly. It's a great site with something for everyone. It has a beautiful woods to explore in. We see a deer whilst exploring the woods. The lakes are beautiful. Could see lots of stars. There was a campers kitchen, games room, clean indoor and outdoor toilet/shower facilities. This site has a lot to offer. The deer spotting and outdoor shower sold it to my daughter. Would definitely stay here again the next time we visit Devon.

Liked: Privacy and views

Disliked: Distance to nearest town for cycling as one quiet road was closed. (Not the campsites fault)

Meadow non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Nice friendly people working at the site, the owner was also very patient as I arrived late owing to a tyre puncture. Fortunately the bar was still open for a very necessary drink or two. I don't know how many times the pub has been mentioned before, but it's definitely worth a visit on the weekend, interesting decor. Some nice walks from the site itself as well as being close to Dartmoor and the coast. Also look out for the occasional events held. All in all, a nice campsite in a good location.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Orchard bell tent

Liked: A little haven in the middle of nowhere, but not too far from Bude and Cornwall. Owners were super friendly and accommodating. We loved the quirky bar and outdoor seating area, with all the twinkly lights. We stayed in a furnished bell tent and it was perfect and the surroundings just gorgeous. It came with a fire-pit and so we bought a big basket of logs and kindling from the site and had a fire-pit both nights we stayed. There are shared facilities for campers to use - microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge etc which meant we didn’t have to pack all of our camping stuff. In the tent was a cool box and plastic plates, bowls, knives and forks which was a lovely touch. We’re definitely planning to return next year, as we loved it so much

Disliked: Nothing we disliked, loved it all

Local attractions

There are plenty of castles and stately piles nearby to make you feel like a Devon (or Cornish) landowner of the past: Lawrence House, Okehampton Castle, Castle Drogo, Cotehele and Buckland Abbey are all within an hour’s drive of Reforge Retreat. More of a horticulturist than a historian? The gardens, orchards, arboreta and borders of RHS Garden Rosemoor are 25 minutes from the site… Garden trips don’t have to be stuffy grownup affairs either – the kids may not be drawn in by border gardens and arboreta, but poking around the Gnome Reserve and Wildflower Garden should keep them entertained. Anglers will have plenty to keep them occupied close at hand too. Cast a line at the Legge Farm Coarse Fishery, less than 10 minutes from the site, or head to Tamar Lakes, 25 minutes away, for something to cook up on the barbecue later on. If you’re in search of something less sedate, be prepared to get active with a trip to Bude, half an hour from Reforge, where you can go surfing, coasteering or paddleboarding, or simply take a stroll on the beach. At Tamar Lakes, try your hand at sailing and windsurfing. Keep your adrenaline pumping in the Battlefield arena or on the rollercoaster at The Big Sheep theme park, then slow it down with safari rides or lakeside train rides without leaving the park.
