  • Dog-friendly wild camping on a rural working farm in Devon
  • A 15-minute drive from Combe Martin and 25 minutes from Ilfracombe
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed; firepits provided
When it feels like it's time to take things off-grid, pack your bags and set your sights on Barton Town Camping, where the surrounding farmland and woodlands make for a restful rural refuge. A dog-friendly site with firepits and off-ground barbecues welcome, here you can join a working farm and settle down for some wild camping in the Devon countryside. No need to fret about being completely cut off, though… within a 15-minute drive from Combe Martin and 25 minutes from Ilfracombe, you have first-hand access to the Jurassic Coast and its cliffs, coves and coastal towns. And you don’t need to fret about leaving your dog behind, as they’re welcome to join you as long as they're kept on a lead. This is a back to basics site, but there's a firepit (bring your own wood), portable toilet and running water to make sure you can always keep your bottle topped up. Tackling the local area is certainly thirsty work… the Jurassic Coast is ripe grounds for watersports, walking and sailing, and there's no shortage of farmland and woodland for exploration closer to the site. When a pint is calling your name, head down a quiet country lane and through farmland to the local village of Challacombe (half an hour’s walk) where there's a shop and a stone-built country pub to unwind in.

Local attractions

Once you've had your fill of wildlife spotting in the bountiful Devon countryside, there are rarer species for spotting at Exmoor Zoo (five minutes’ drive). Lions, wolves and dinosaur figurines also reside at the Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (15 minutes). More wonders of times past are at Arlington Court (15 minutes). The country house and gardens do a good job of whisking you back to the 19th century. Lynton and Lynmouth (20 minutes) are also ready to set you under their spell, with a taste of Victorian engineering found on the steam railway. Return to present times in the local towns… will it be coastal Combe Martin (15 minutes), with its cliffs and coves ripe for walking, or an afternoon out in the market towns of South Molton (25 minutes) and Barnstaple (20 minutes)? If the sea is calling your name, make your way to Ilfracombe (25 minutes), where boats at the harbour will take you out for fishing or cove-hopping, and miniature golf, cinemas and fish and chips complete the day. Woolacombe (35 minutes) is a gateway to more sandy beaches, with coastal paths taking you from cove to cove, and many opportunities to dip into watersports along the way.
