  • Simple rural site 10 minutes' drive from Redruth and Camborne
  • St Ives, St Michael's Mount and Praa Sands within a half-hour drive
  • Central Cornwall spot roughly halfway between north and south coasts
It’s the subject of a long-running debate in Cornwall… which is better – the north coast or the south coast? If you’d like to develop your own views on the issue, a fine place to do so is at Dowha Fields Camping, a simple site pretty much halfway between the two and with distant views out to both coastlines. Truth be told, it’s unlikely you’ll come to any definitive answers about the winner of such a debate, as both north and south coastlines are pretty splendid in their own way. You can certainly have a whole lot of fun attempting to make the decision though – this handy spot is roughly 20 minutes’ drive from each coast, so you’re recommended to explore as much as possible of both while staying here. So that’s your outings all sorted; what of the essentials of life? Well, those are pretty straightforward to deal with too – the local towns of Redruth and Camborne are both about 10 minutes away by car for pubs, restaurants and supermarkets, and there’s a little shop on site too. Portaloos and a washing-up area are provided for guests here, but otherwise all is kept very simple at this peaceful open space. Dogs, kids and groups are all welcome here, and the generally laidback vibe also lends itself rather well to evenings of barbecues and campfires.

Local attractions

There are, of course, heaps of handsome spots to hit along the Cornwall coastline, but first-timers may like to take in some of the greatest hits locally for starters. Aim north and your stops should include art-filled St Ives (half an hour’s drive), gorgeous Gwithian beach (20 minutes) and a walk around the Godrevy Heritage Coast (20 minutes). To the south, Praa Sands (25 minutes), the pretty harbour of Porthleven (20 minutes) and island fort St Michael’s Mount (25 minutes) are perennial faves, and there’s stacks of splendid scenery to explore on the Lizard Peninsula beyond if you’ve got more time. When you’ve done a bit of both north and south, head off to the point where the two meet: Land’s End is about a 50-minute drive from the site. And maybe you’d like to do a little bit of inland exploring too? There are plenty of places to go for a rural ramble nearby, and a good clutch of watersports to try out at Stithians Lake (15 minutes away), including windsurfing, paddleboarding and sailing lessons.
