  • Porthtowan beach five minutes’ drive; Portreath beach 10 minutes
  • Tree-sheltered grass pitches; firepit and bike hire; café on site
After a slice of rural West Country life? That’s exactly what you get at Elm Farm, a Cornwall smallholding where the camping fields have uninterrupted views across Laity Moor to the hilly local landmarks of Carn Brea and Carn Marth. Tucked away in the peaceful Nancekuke Valley and just 10 minutes’ drive from Redruth's shops and pubs, the tree-sheltered grass pitches are positioned around the perimeter of two spacious meadows, leaving lots of open space in the middle for kids to play safely. Catering concerns are all taken care of: you can rent a firepit and buy wood from reception to get grilling up a barbecue, and there’s also a café on site to save you the bother of cooking. Need advice on country or coastal walks? Ask the site owners – their local knowledge is second to none. If you’d like to explore the quiet Cornish lanes under pedal power, you can hire bikes from them too. Whether you’re on site or out and about, keep a beady eye open for wildlife: buzzards and barn owls are common sights, but you may strike lucky and spot foxes, badgers and stoats as well. The camping fields are supplied with clean drinking water and solar lights around the amenities block, which has a constant supply of hot water. There’s another loo beside the café, just a short skip up the hill.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely little site - a very relaxing stay. First time using this sort of compost loo and both my son and I were pleasantly surprised how clean and efficient it was. Lovely spacious showers. Very friendly and informative owners/staff. Amazing breakfast, and other food throughout the day which we didn’t have chance to try. Only thing missing was a drying area for wetsuits, but didn’t really expect it on this smaller site.

Liked: Elm Farm is a fantastic site run by a lovely couple who have managed to keep all the lovely bits of camping in a well maintained site that is also relaxed and respectful to the environment. Toilets and showers are are clean - spacious showers with plenty of hooks and hot water. Even in mid-August, I only had to wait 5 mins for a shower on one occasion during our week long stay. The cafe serves a fantastic freshly-cooked breakfast and coffee. The surrounding beaches, coast path and mining trails are great for walking, running and cycling. It was the perfect site for us to use as basecamp while being on hand for teens at Boardmasters! Thank you Ali and Reuben.

Disliked: Nothing.

Liked: Lovely level, well kept field. Peaceful at night. Easy walk to the footpath to Portreath, which forms part of the Coast to Coast Bissoe cycle trail, which I walked one way. Composting toilets were extremely efficient, first time using this style of toilet and actually found them a far more pleasant experience than many of the traditional loos on sites we've stay on previously. The Bridge Inn is within an easy walking distance, but just be aware, this is a very "traditional" pub with an extremely small (one item on a Friday night) menu, but with a pleasant beer garden by a small river!

Disliked: Minor point, but branches overhanging the narrow track to the second field could do with some pruning as vehicles driving off the track to avoid scraping their sides had caused it to become muddy after a spell of wet weather.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: A lovely, little campsite with lots of charm and a chilled-out atmosphere. Well-kept, eco-friendly facilities (composting loos, solar panels, wild meadows, bikes to hire). The pitches were flat, showers were hot, and the toilets clean (and not too far away!). The owners were friendly and relaxed, with a cute on-site cafe/bar, a little campers 'barn' to charge devices and use the fridge, and even al-fresco ping-pong. We loved being able to walk down very quiet back lanes to get to the coastal path and then onto the beach. Being close to all the north coast beaches but away from the masses made for a stress-free time.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very nice little campsite. Only stayed one night as we were hiking the south west coast path, but would happily return. Flat field to pitch in. Wash up area, excellent eco composting loos and great showers (4x large shower rooms with plenty hot water and hooks to hang your gear, also a hand basin in each shower room). These were down by the camping pitches. Also free WiFi and charging facilities and extra 'regular' flush loos by reception, which is also a lovely little cafe. We had cream teas without the tea - I had cider instead with mine! There was some great sounding food on the menu too but our hiking schedule meant we didn't have time to stay and try the savoury dishes, maybe next time.

Local attractions

Surfers, you’ve struck lucky, as Elm Farm is close to the sandy surfing beaches of Portreath (10 minutes’ drive) and Porthtowan (five minutes). Long-distance walkers, this campsite makes a handy overnighter when you’re hiking the South West Coast Path (10 minutes); if you’re up for shorter potters, it takes around half an hour to stroll to cliffs along the rugged North Cornwall coastline. Culture vultures might want to head for St Ives (25 minutes) to absorb the arty delights of the Tate St Ives or the stellar collection at the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. If that’s a step too far for the attention spans of your kids, take them to pan for gold and explore a former tin-smelting mill at Cornwall Gold and Tolgus Mill (five minutes). Up the family activity levels with a few speedy laps on quad bikes at The ATV Centre (10 minutes, booking required), or spend some crafty grown-up time sampling award-winning scrumpy at Healeys Cornish Cyder Farm (15 minutes). For the music fans among you, there are occasional festivals at Mount Pleasant Ecological Park (five minutes).
