Sunset over the site

  • Peaceful, simple site by the Cornish coast with stunning sea views
  • A mile from Porthleven and its three-mile sandy beach
  • Pick your own pitch; easy access to South West Coast Path
If you’re keen to see some of Cornwall’s gorgeous coastline on foot, this is a site you’ll certainly want to put on your list. Penrose Campsite is one of those places where you can leave your wheels on site for a while and set off on numerous walks right from the camping field – including several trails that take you to beaches, the coast path and local pubs. This farm site sits just next to the National Trust’s Penrose Estate, and it’s just one field away from the South West Coast Path, about a mile from Porthleven. That means plenty of options around for those who like to roam on foot, as well as a huge long beach nearby for paddling, sandcastles and surfing. The lively village also offers up a good range of places to eat and drink, plus a bakery and a fishmonger for supplies for your barbecue. Speaking of barbecues, they’re allowed on site as long as they’re kept off the ground and supervised – and they make a wonderful accompaniment to an evening spent watching the sun set into the sea from your pitch. And speaking of pitches, it’s a pick-your-own setup here, so you can choose your favourite spot and claim however much space you need (within reason, of course). To help everyone enjoy the wonderfully scenic and peaceful surroundings, this is a quiet site with no music allowed. Facilities have been kept on the simple side but cover all the basics: you’ll have access to toilets, free hot showers, a chemical disposal point and a washing-up area.

Local attractions

Porthleven is a fabulous little village, with lots of lovely places to eat and shop, plus a local craft market and the chance to book a fishing boat trip. The long sandy beach stretches out for three miles, and it’s a popular spot for surfing (the strong waves mean it’s less good for swimming – for that you’ll probably want to go somewhere like Praa Sands, 15 minutes’ drive away). Walkers should find plenty of places to stroll nearby, including walks around Loe Pool and the Penrose Estate, both of which are only a little way from the site. And of course there’s the South West Coast Path to consider – you can either set out directly from the site or drive a short way to tackle other scenic stretches like the section around Rinsey Cove (15 minutes’ drive) or the trail to Lizard Point (half an hour). Time for something a bit different? Try the Helston Railway (15 minutes), Cornish Seal Sanctuary (20 minutes), National Trust - Godolphin (20 minutes) or the climbing trails of Via Ferrata Cornwall (25 minutes).
