West Country bound and hunting for a peaceful, back-to-basics sort of stay? Make a beeline for Clowance Vean, 10 minutes’ drive from Camborne in a quiet corner of rural Cornwall. Set on a working farm with citrus fruits and olives growing under glass, the pop-up camping field is flat, spacious and well-drained. Simple facilities stretch to two toilets; there is no electricity here and wifi reception is limited to the farmyard. Free-range geese and other poultry run wild around the place; please don’t feed or chase them. There’s an unmonitored reservoir that is not suitable for swimming, but apart from that you are free to wander around the fields and have picnics wherever you please. Keep your eyes peeled on your wanders for swallows in the barns, owls hunting over long grass, buzzards, jays, nuthatches and bats, as well as badgers, rabbits and weasels. Dogs are welcome but must be kept under close control on the campsite and around the farm. A 2.8-acre field is set aside for exercising your pooches; please be sure to pick up after them. Non-disposable gas or charcoal barbecues are allowed on site, and the local village of Praze-an-Beeble (five minutes’ drive) has a bakery selling proper Cornish pasties as well as an essentials shop and post office. Beaches, family theme parks and pretty coastal towns can all be found within half an hour’s drive.
