  • Well-kept woodland campsite in a West Sussex wildlife haven
  • A 20-minute drive to Chichester; Portsmouth city centre half an hour
  • Campfires allowed; a mile from Compton village shop and tea rooms
Camp, cook and play among the trees at Hundred Acres Woodland Camping, a wild woodland site in southern West Sussex. While not quite wilderness (a village shop and tea rooms are about a mile away), this place is still abuzz with wildlife. After all, it's located well within the boundaries of the spectacular South Downs National Park, all of which was declared an international dark sky reserve in 2016. Evening stargazing can be accompanied by evenings chatting around the bonfire (in the designated areas). This is a quiet site, so although after-dark gatherings are very welcome, you'll need to think about finishing up by the time quiet hours kick in at 11. As you might expect when bivouacking out in the woods, the facilities here are basic: there's a portable toilet, a cold water tap and that's pretty much it. Going without some luxuries definitely pays off, though, as the local landscape is full of opportunities for walkers, cyclists and equestrian folk. If you walk a quarter of an hour down the nearest bridleway, you'll also be able to join the long-distance South Downs Way. For evenings out, there's a friendly village pub a couple of miles down the road. Those stocking up for the long haul, meanwhile, might want to head to the supermarkets in Petersfield (15 minutes' drive) or to Adsdean Farm Shop (15 minutes).

Local attractions

Mad about mosaics? Fishbourne Roman Palace (20 minutes' drive) is one of the best-preserved Roman villas in what was once the imperial province of Britannia. Those properly hyped about hypocausts could also drive a little further to explore Bignor Roman Villa (40 minutes), which was accidentally unearthed in the 19th century by a local ploughman. For medieval architecture, there are two well-preserved cities within your reach: Chichester (20 minutes) and Winchester (50 minutes), both of which have attractive cathedral closes to wander through. If you're after more modern urban spots, perhaps Portsmouth (30 minutes) will impress: the sky-high Spinnaker Tower and trendy shopping opportunities at Gunwharf Quays both draw visitors from far and wide. While you're at it, you could hop on the hovercraft and zoom over to spend a day on the Isle of Wight (crossing time around 10 minutes). For coastal spots on the mainland, try West Wittering (35 minutes), Bognor Regis (35 minutes) or Brighton (an hour). For less briny waters to swim in, meanwhile, set your satnav for Petersfield Open Air Pool (15 minutes) or Havant leisure centre (15 minutes).
