The Roughs non-electric grass tent pitch
Liked: Really chilled out campsite, if you're looking for wild.. this is the campsite. Beautiful surroundings, perfect number of pitches. Attentive owner that ensures you're supported but very much leaves you to it. The reservoir is the perfect size to paddle board around, amazing to swim in first thing in the morning. The local pub is a very short walk through lovely woods, serving great pub food, very friendly staff. I will definitely be back.

Tennis Wells non-electric grass tent pitch
Liked: Such a lovely family run campsite that pays real attention to detail and couldn’t be more helpful. They don’t pack you in cheek by jowl and there is just a real muck in together vibe. The weather was terrible but everyone helped out and it made it such an experience. I have to say we didn’t try the showers as we got wet enough as it was but they looked lovely. The porta loos were no worse or better than any other ones I’ve used. I wonder though if there isn’t a slightly more salubrious solution for ablutions though. At £120 for 2 adults 2 children and 2 cars I would expect a little more in the way of facilities but the reservoir does help offset that. We hired a paddle board and though there are easier boards to use it was perfectly adequate. We will definitely go back!!
Disliked: The chalk tracks were quite slick in the wet and as I said I’m sure there is a better solution than the ports loos.

The Roughs non-electric grass tent pitch
Liked: Beautiful scenery, views and setting. The Rough is a lovely large field and not packed with loads of pitches so it's a lovely tranquil setting. Fab to have the reservoir to swim/SUP a short walk from the pitches. Provision of fire pit and wood a nice touch. Owners were around to answer any questions and are lovely. Short walk to lovely local pub with fab garden!
Disliked: Toilets had usually run out of toilet roll for the early morning trip!

From the manager: Hi, thank you so much for the fabulous review, super appreciated :) Goodness knows what happens to the 4 loo rolls we put in every morning around 9.30, honestly we thought 4 would do 24hrs!! We've popped signs in each loo asking for a bit of mindfulness & not use more than necessary ;)
absolute gem of a campsite not to be missed

The Roughs non-electric grass tent pitch
Liked: loved the location, the lake, the comms, the setting out rough pitch settings, the welcome, was all fab. plus the walk up to the pub is a must, not only because of the fan views when up there
Disliked: personally i prefer long drop loos as less smelly, feel more in keeping, and i would have loved a portable shower unit. i know its nice to do the bucket showers but a hot shower would mean i would have stayed longer, but everything else amazing

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review :) We are looking into compost loo's, they will be hired in as we wouldn't get planning to do them ourselves unfortunately. We are painting our water bowsers for the showers black so they'll retain a bit of warmth (hopefully!)

The Roughs non-electric grass tent pitch
Liked: Proper away from it all camping, beautiful site with lots of walks. Loved the bucket showers, even though we didn't get a chance to try as we chose to leap into the reservoir - perfect for a dip!
Disliked: Not keen on the portaloos, would prefer proper composting loos.

The Roughs non-electric grass tent pitch
Liked: Beautiful countryside and views, plenty of space and very quiet midweek. We stayed in the Roughs which is a huge field with pitches dotted around the edge. Lovely walk to the pub in Elsted. It has a very pleasant beer garden overlooking the South Downs hills. We enjoyed sitting by the fire in the evenings looking at the stars and watching the moon rise over the trees (it was clear the day after the supermoon). We didn’t end up going in the reservoir due to the weather (and mud), but could see it would be very attractive in warmer weather. Lovely walks up in the Downs. The National Trust Harting Down has a carpark and is a good place to start. We also visited Uppark (National Trust) which was beautiful. Lyndsay is very friendly and full of information. We also enjoyed Cowdray Farm shop and Cafe in Midhurst. Lovely spot for lunch or coffee.
Disliked: We’ve never stayed somewhere without running water and did miss having hot showers but it was such a lovely site it was worth it for a few days. There are bucket showers available with water bowsers near by.
