  • Back to basics stays between Bognor Regis and Littlehampton
  • A 20-minute stroll to dog-friendly Climping beach
Swathes of spectacular West Sussex scenery are what guests pitch up among at Alison’s Woodpecker Camping Field, set in loads of space between Bognor Regis and Littlehampton. Run by Alison, Woodpecker is a welcoming site beside the A259, well set for beach days on the south coast as well as for two local pubs: the closest is five minutes’ walk away for pub food and real ales. Barbecues are allowed on pitches (no open fires, please). Woodpecker is a couple of minutes’ drive from the West Sussex village of Climping, a 20-minute stroll from the shingle beach, and within easy reach of Arudel Castle and the southern edge of the South Downs National Park, 15 minutes’ drive away. The pitches are in fields enclosed by high hedges. Amenities include two family shower rooms with underfloor heating, two gas-powered showers, two flushing toilets and five chemical toilets. There's also a washing-up room with two sinks, a fridge, a freezer and plugs for your hairdryer or mobile phone charger.

South field electric grass pitch

Liked: Large pitch. Convenient water stand-pipes and electric hook-up. Plenty of grass area for dogs plus access direct to surrounding fields and local waymarked footpaths. Shower, toilet and pot-wash facilities adequate.

Disliked: Toilet, shower and pot-wash facilities, though adequate during our visit, would struggle if campsite was very busy.

South field electric grass pitch

Liked: Nice hot showers , lots of water points and flat pitches Good location for beach walks

Disliked: We were in south field which was great but wouldn’t want to be in north field as too close to rd Hooks in showers Communal shower mats a little grim but didn’t use

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your comments, always good to hear guests views, I do say that the North Field can be noisy due to the proximity to the road, but as you said, you stayed in the South Field, so that was better as the Holiday Lets building does a good job absorbing any noise. kind regards, Alison

South field electric grass pitch

Liked: Good location - accessible to amenities Adequate size of the pitches The provision of the kitchen area Clean showers

Disliked: We paid more to be in the south field (as the north field was advertised as being noisy because it was near the road) but the south field was noisy too because of the trees and high winds. I didn't sleep a wink the first night.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Dear Georgina, I am sorry that you could not sleep as the wind and trees were so noisy, it was exceptionally windy on the Thursday and Friday night, much more than normal, and there are more trees around the edges of the South Field. Usually the Holiday Lets building absorbs any noise from the road, which is why I say that the South Field is quieter. The extra cost that you paid was actually for the electric hookups in the South Field as that is where they are located. I am pleased that you liked the showers and washing up room, kind regards, Alison

Local attractions

The closest beach is Climping, a 20-minute walk or a few minutes’ drive from the site. It’s a top spot for families for its shallow swimming, and is also popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers, with grass areas for setting up. Also within easy reach is Littlehampton (five minutes’ drive or 10 by the Coastliner bus), home to the family-friendly East beach and its free to use barbecues. Just beside the beach is Harbour Park, an amusement and funfair centre with free entry, rides and indoor play; for a quieter time, hire a bike for a ride along the promenade. If you’re around in summer, a Littlehampton must-do is the ferry ride over to West beach, a Local Nature Reserve. Next up, Bognor Regis (10 minutes’ drive or 25 by bus), for a day at the Marine Park Gardens and boating on the lake, riding the miniature railway, putting on the 18-hole green and having a picnic under the trees. (There are award-winning beaches here too – do make time for some sandy hours as well…). Inland, Arundel is 10 minutes’ drive from the site and Amberley 15.
