A camping break at Chase Farm Glamping can be many things: a family holiday, a romantic getaway or a peaceful rural retreat for tired minds. Set on a working farm near Horsham in West Sussex, this mini-site is surrounded by fields and backed by mature oak trees. Luxurious accommodation units are careful designed to maximise space, with foldaway king-size beds (quality Egyptian linens up the comfort factor), ensuite bathrooms with sliding doors for privacy and fluffy robes and slippers for your downtime – as well as a TV plus plenty of books to dive into. The well-equipped kitchens have all the gear you need to create anything from roast dinners to family picnics, and when the sun comes out, you can move outside for barbecues on the firepit and more gorgeous views from your private decking. Fancy a change from self-catering? Choose from local gastro pubs, cafés and fine-dining restaurants. One well-behaved dog per unit is permitted to stay and the site owners provide a doggie welcome pack for your furry companion. If you go quietly about your daily business on site, you may well be rewarded by the sight of roe deer grazing in the field and buzzards soaring on the thermals overhead. The sunsets hereabout can be pretty spectacular too, and at night when the skies are clear, you may glimpse the Milky Way from your private terrace, prettily illuminated with fairy lights.

Get the walking boots on to explore local woodland and have a mooch through pretty villages along the Downs Link route (15 minutes’ walk). For long-distance hikes, head for trails on the high chalk escarpment in the South Downs National Park (25 minutes’ drive), while water-sports fans can head for Southwater Country Park (five minutes) for canoeing and sailing on the lake. Family days out might include a visit to the lemurs and flamingoes at Drusillas Park (45 minutes), or time spent on the sands at Worthing (half an hour), where kids can also have a go on the beachside Ferris wheel. Take a tootle through West Sussex countryside aboard the Bluebell Railway (45 minutes), or treat the offspring to an encounter with wallabies at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens (15 minutes). Have a day out to boho Brighton (40 minutes) to meander down the pier for sea views or play the amusement arcades, before doing a bit of window-shopping for jewellery and art on The Lanes. If culture is more to your interest, tour the ornate Royal Pavilion or head to Arundel (half an hour) to explore the cathedral and castle, or check out Winston Churchill’s former wartime HQ at Chartwell (50 minutes).
