Train enthusiasts will be in their element at Yamp Camp Bluebell – listen carefully and you may just hear the high-pitched whistle of the Bluebell Railway’s steam trains passing by, along with that deep atmospheric thud that comes with them. Want to get a closer look? This rural West Sussex campsite is a five-minute walk from Horsted Keynes station, where you can board those very same trains from a stop so traditional and atmospheric it’s even had a TV role in Downton Abbey. The main village (20 minutes’ walk) also has a couple of pubs and a convenience store to have you sorted with some snacks for the journey or a post-train pint. For bigger meals, barbecues and campfires are considered to be an essential part of the Bluebell experience; there’s an excellent farm shop for local meat and other goodies 15 minutes’ drive away at Townings Farm and supermarkets are 10 minutes away in Haywards Heath. You should find that there’s plenty of space to relax on site too – the camping field is at the end of a woodland track and surrounded by trees that keep it nicely sheltered even on the windiest of days. Pitches are hand-allocated to suit the needs of guests, generally keeping adult groups in one area and families in another. Dogs are welcome, and there’s lots of scope for kids to run about in the field or poke about in the woods. This is a site with a back to basics approach, but eco toilets, warm showers and washing-up areas are on hand for just a few creature comforts.

Local attractions

It's not just the Bluebell Railway that’s of interest to train fans around here – it’s also worth taking a trip to the huge Ouse Valley Viaduct (10 minutes’ drive) to see more modern services crossing. The viaduct is a pretty spectacular sight even if you’re not particularly interested in trains, too. For a change of scenery, follow Winnie the Pooh-themed walks through the bear’s home turf at Ashdown Forest (10 minutes), head into Lewes (25 minutes) for the castle and Southover Grange or take yourselves down to Barcombe Mills (25 minutes) to hire a boat for a trip on the River Ouse. There are several lovely gardens to explore around here too: try the National Trust estates at Sheffield Park (10 minutes) and Standen House (15 minutes), or take strolls through Borde Hill Garden and Wakehurst (both 10 minutes) – the latter managed by Kew Gardens and home of the Millennium Seed Bank.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Wonderful quiet site with tree cover and a big main field. Clean compost toilets.
No traffic noise at all which is genuinely so nice. Right next to the steam railway which is fun for little people too. We camped but there is glamping onsite. Be aware that the two are quite far apart if you have a mixed group.

Disliked: The site is basic which is lovely but could do with an additional water tap up by the compost toilets. There is no waste collection on site which is advertised, but for groups this can be tricky.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The open space and distance between pitches.
The stars at night.
Compost loos were well kept and clean.
Quiet but convenient location for travelling to Brighton.
Lovely wild flower / grass in the centre of the field was perfect for bug hunting!
Warm showers with open roof, like showing in the woods.
Little/no phone signal was actually much appreciated!
Hearing the local steam trains chuffing and tooting was great and much loved by my little one.

Disliked: The only thing I can fault is the track to the camping field. There was a huge dip/ramp that almost took the bottom of my car off!
