  • Secluded basic site on two acres of West Sussex countryside
  • A 20-minute walk from Hickstead Showground and local pub
  • South Downs National Park and Brighton within a 20-minute drive
Sometimes you’re in the mood to stay somewhere full of fancy facilities; at other times you’re travelling in self-sufficient manner and just after a peaceful place to rest your head for a night or few. For those trips of the latter variety, wend your way to West Sussex and a stay at Greenfield Camping. This quiet rural retreat is on a two-acre field (a green one indeed, as the name suggests, and a well-maintained one too) in a secluded spot 10 minutes’ drive from the little town of Hassocks. All has been kept very simple on site here – there’s a cold tap for drinking water but otherwise it’s likely to be just you, a teeny number of fellow guests and some fab rural views. (Top tip: those views may well make a cracking backdrop for a barbecue evening, or a stroll in the company of your hound.) Feel free to loaf about on site, of course, but the likelihood is that you'll be out and about a fair amount – perhaps strolling to the showjumping mecca Hickstead Showground (a 20-minute walk away), getting your boots on for a hike in the South Downs National Park or planning a day of bimbling around Brighton. Even if you don’t demand much in the way of facilities, you’ll no doubt be in need of some food, so it’s handy to note that you can amble to the local pub and community shop in around 20 minutes.

Local attractions

This is a fine place to park up if you’re heading to Hickstead to see the horses show off their skills at an event – the famed All England Jumping Course is a 20-minute walk from the site, so there’s no need to get involved in any car parking shenanigans. If that's inspired you to get in the saddle yourself, sort riding days at a stables 10 minutes’ drive away. For other outdoorsy activities, there are three golf courses within a 15-minute drive and many a trail to hike or bike along in the South Downs National Park, 10 minutes away. Should you be a fan of walks that involve wine (who isn’t?), schedule an amble around Albourne Estate (10 minutes) on a day when the tasting room’s open for tryouts. Rural antics are rather fab, yes, but if you're after a spot of city time you can barely do better than Brighton, 20 minutes' drive away. The beach, pier, the independent shops and bars in the Lanes area, the exotic Royal Pavilion, the Gothic aquarium, the toy museum, the glow-in-the-dark crazy golf course – you’ll easily find plenty to pack a day with.
