  • Dog-friendly site in the peaceful South Downs National Park
  • A 25-minute drive from Brighton; 15 minutes to Devil’s Dyke
  • Adventure trail, swing tree and places for den making on site
Hunker down in a historic village, surrounded by vineyards, hilly countryside and some rather spectacular views. With Ditchling Camping as your base, you’ll be on track for rural bike rides or visiting Brighton and its busy coast 25 minutes’ drive away. That’s because this dog-friendly site is in Ditchling – a village in the splendid South Downs National Park and a rather excellent location for all sorts of days out. Good news if the whole family is tagging along: there’s plenty to play with around the site, including an adventure trail through the woodlands, a swing tree and places for kids to fashion their own little dens. The site is only a five-minute drive (or a 50-minute walk) from the traditional Jack and Jill windmills and the neighbouring family-run pub, which serves both grub and good ales. A vineyard is 15 minutes’ walk away from the site if you'd like to include a wine-tasting tour on your break. Otherwise, simply pedal along country lanes on the surrounding cycling routes (it’s easy enough to hire a bike locally). On your route, you might want to stop by in characterful Ditchling, home to local craftspeople and winemakers. There’s a nice selection of independent shops here, plus cosy cafés and pubs that will serve you a good spread of Sussex food, all within a 10-minute walk. Back on site, end the day with a cosy evening beside the firepits. The site facilities are nicely straightforward otherwise and include warm showers and a separate dishwashing area.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: It's a lovely setting. I woke up on my first morning to a beautiful view of the rising sun on the Downs. When i was there it was very quiet and there was plenty of space and all the other campers seemed very considerate. It was very easy and very good value for money. It's good that you can hire a firebowl and firewood.

Disliked: It's a very basic site, which probably helps it not get too busy? The portaloo was very clean but there was no hand soap in the dispenser. The portaloo was also on a slope, which left you with a rather disconcerting feeling on the loo that the whole thing was about to tip over backwards (it didn't, of course). This also meant that the blue liquid you flush with was trying to flush solids uphill against gravity, which doesn't work very well.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Great location for walking and cycling into the South Downs and great to have a good selection of pubs within a few minutes walk. Very peaceful campsite with the pitches very well sheltered from the high winds over the weekend.

Disliked: Portaloo’s weren’t very functional and with only 2 onsite I could imagine this being more of an issue if the campsite had been busier as luckily it was very quiet. There also didn’t seem to be any hot water for the showers which may have been because they were almost inaccessible due to the high winds.

From the manager: Hi Guys, Glad that you enjoyed your stay and ventured to the local pubs and possibly went for a walk or cycle.... I apologise about the portaloo's - due to the rain and high winds I overlooked checking them when dropping them onto the site. Unfortunately there wasn't enough water in the tank to start them flushing properly. All understood now and will be checked properly in the future and water added if needed. And also the showers. The high winds on Friday late afternoon blew the protection off which broke and could not be put back in place immediately. This meant that the hot showers could NOT be turned on as rain would get into the mechanism. All fixed now and up and running... Hopefully see you again soon.

Liked: Nice campsite - basic but very pleasant, walking distance to ditchling village centre and pubs. One shower was abit temperamental (temp wise) but wasnt a problem as we just used the other one. Owner was very pleasant, helpful and friendly. Overall a lovely 2 day stay with family and friends.

Disliked: being close to a road which i wasn't aware of upon booking but it wasn't a super busy road so didn't pose much of a problem during our stay.

From the manager: Really nice to meet you all - I apologise about the shower - Being resolved as I type. Ditchling is a lovely village, with two pubs doing great food....

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Great location, we had a lovely wander around Ditchling and Hassocks on Saturday before catching the train to Brighton for a few hours. We got a takeaway in Hassocks on the way back and took it back to the campsite. The facilities and communication was great. The other campers were friendly. We had a lovely weekend and would definitely return.

Disliked: Shame no where to dispose of rubbish

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: She certainly is in a beautiful location, with the pubs, cafe's and other shops just a stones throw, whilst also having the sense of total isolation when on the site. We considered having rubbish bins, but decided that they would not be environmentally friendly as it only takes one camper to mix up the rubbish (recyclables, bottles, cans, food waste and others) to make all of the rubbish not recyclable... Its a shame, but true.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: A lot of things to explore near by e.g. museum and art galleries, hill walkin, summer fair, etc. Big field for the kids

Disliked: Unfortunately our tent close to the young people's tents. They were having party fir two night until 3am.... It will be good to have more showers to reduce waiting time.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Glad that you enjoyed the location and the field. Sorry to hear that your next door neighbours were up till 3am - If we had known we would have asked them to calm down after 11pm, but unfortunately this is the first time that this has been brought to our attention We'll aim for more showers next year as they certainly help in this excessive hot spell. Hopefully see you again

Local attractions

With a valley on either side, a walk through Devil's Dyke (15 minutes’ drive) isn’t as fearsome as the name sounds. In fact, it’s really very peaceful, and the area is owned by the National Trust, which keeps the beauty spot in shape. If you have a soft spot for wildlife and scenery, head off to the botanic gardens at Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens (25 minutes) and Wakehurst (half an hour). Sheffield Park and Garden (20 minutes) is more historic: the National Trust owns the 18th-century landscaped garden. Borde Hill Garden (20 minutes) has relaxing woodlands and gardens that include a playground for the young ones in your group too. In Brighton (25 minutes) and Eastbourne (45 minutes), it’s easy to entertain yourselves with the amusements of the seaside. Hastings (an hour and 10 minutes) has plenty of that ilk as well, along with an old town and steam train. You’ll be able to seek out watersports inland too. Ardingly Reservoir (25 minutes) hires out kayaks, dinghies and paddleboards and provides space for fishing too.
