  • Wild site in peaceful woodland on the Sussex Weald
  • Five minutes' drive to East Grinstead shops, pubs and Bluebell railway
  • 10 minutes to Ashdown Forest and 20 to Ardingly Activity Centre
Walk in the steps of Winnie the Pooh on this wild woodland patch of the Sussex Weald. There’s a touch of drama about checking into Evergreen Farm Woodland Campsite: you make your way to a spot 150 metres from the main site, and you won’t see anything except the trees. A quad bike with a trailer roars down the path to pick up your stuff and take it to a tiny, peaceful site in 10 acres of ancient woodland. With sleeping among the trees, cooking on firepits and listening to the birds, you could be in the wilderness… but you’re five minutes’ drive from town and 40-odd miles from London. It’s a simple site, focused on peace and quiet in the natural surroundings. Guests have two compost toilets to use; 25-litre containers of drinking water are provided, and firewood can be obtained from the farm (affording a chance to meet the sheep, pigs, goats and horses). A half-hour walk or a five-minute drive and you’re in East Grinstead, an attractive medieval town well furnished with pubs, eats and supermarkets. The site is also within walking distance of Standen House, an arts and crafts home with William Morris interiors and eye-catching hillside gardens. Nature tamed: a neat contrast with your wild wood accommodation.

Pond non-electric forest floor tent pitch (adults only)

Liked: Nothing!! Never got to camp as got an email from the owner saying he had to close the site for a family emergency. Asked me to give my bank details so he could refund me and has gone completely dark since. No communication whatsoever. I've called him multiple times with no answer at all!! Absolutely disgusting!!!

Disliked: After a lovely stay last year, we turned up yesterday for our holiday which we booked 6 months ago. When we contacted to request access through the gates we were told that the site was closed, and had been since the end of March! The owner said he had emailed me last Monday (which he hasn’t) and had still taken payment, and I had not received a refund. Left in the lurch after travel, we have had to find somewhere else to stay last minute. Really disappointed that more of an effort was not made to contact us before hand.

Pond non-electric forest floor tent pitch (adults only)

Liked: For those that want to get away for the weekend, enjoy some wild camping, be away from all the noise, and are happy to go without some home essentials (though the site does have toilets which are very clean) then this place is perfect. The place is secluded and very quiet. Chris, the host is very friendly and welcoming. Access to the site is on a keycode that the owner provides to you on arrival (remember the code as you'll need it when exiting). I stayed on the "pond non-electric forest floor tent pitch" and it certainly was a great location - in the corner and very secluded. The site overall is very clean, with each unit having its own rubbish bin and small fire pit (brick built). Finding your way around is easy as there are footpaths leading straight to the site - you can't get lost. Looking forward to my next trip here again!

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: Chris was very helpful and friendly, drove my equipment down to the pitch to save me carrying it. Secure site with electronic gate entry. Great location near to East Grinstead town centre.

Disliked: Noise from a large group who stayed there at the same time as I did. Loud music and shouting till early hours of the night

Local attractions

While you’re in East Grinstead, grab a ticket to ride the Bluebell Railway, where restored steam locomotives take you on a 40-minute tour of the Weald countryside finishing up in Sheffield Park. There's acres of landscaped gardens, parks and woodland to wander round there, and a lake to picnic by. Walkers and climbers congregate at Stone Hill Rock (15 minutes’ drive), a geological oddity of sandstone crags ripe for clambering up and hiking around. Equally stuffed with trails for the curious is Ashdown Forest (10 minutes), a mix of deep woods and open heathland home to deer, adders, nightjars and a certain famous bear. Make for Pooh Sticks Bridge for the must-do activity on the river stream (20 minutes from site) and seek out Five Hundred Acre Wood to see where it all started. Furry friends of a different kind can be encountered at the llama park 15 minutes from the site. No deer at Deer Leap Park (five minutes), but mountain bikers have 240 acres of trails and slopes and scrambles to cycle up, down and off; hire bikes here if you haven't brought your own. If water’s more your thing, Ardingly Activity Centre (20 minutes) has the aquatic full monty, from fishing to windsurfing and kayaking to paddleboarding.
