  • Scenic and spacious site in the South Downs National Park
  • Chichester within 20 minutes’ drive; seaside resorts within 30
  • Direct access to the Monarch's Way; 10 mins from the South Downs Way
If a digital, social and material detox is just what’s needed, toss that smartphone, don that crown and listen up: it’s back to basics at Kingley Vale Camp Site, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the West Sussex village of Chilgrove... follow the Monarch’s Way right to a pitch. This is paradise for ramblers, hikers, bikers and anyone else who longs to spend hols wandering the countryside. The site’s 25 minutes from Kingley Vale Nature Reserve, where strolls through woodland and ancient stands of yew bring walkers to the prehistoric Iron Age site of Goosehill Camp. This is the South Downs National Park too, so there are plenty of other trails to follow, including the 100-mile South Downs Way, which can be joined 10 minutes away in Cocking Hills. Explores in an urban setting are easily done too, as the city of Chichester is less than 20 minutes from base. There’s been a settlement here since the Roman times, so there’s history round every corner. Start with the Fishbourne Roman Palace, then trip along in time to the Bishop’s Palace Garden, Chichester Cathedral, the Novium museum and the planetarium – and have a go around the shops of course too.... When it’s time to retreat to the site, it really is a retreat: this is no-frills through and through (except luckily for one: luxury toilet facilities and showers), and there are no evening entertainments, organised activities or theme nights to interrupt the peace and quiet. Pack and prep for self-service stays, and feel free to anticipate calm nights by the campfire, barbecue on the air and pooch snoring nearby, when eyes can be turned to clear night skies for top-notch stargazing – this is a Dark Sky Reserve after all...

Local attractions

If appetites for history have been well and truly whetted by jaunts into Chichester, there’ll be no going hungry hereabouts: Goodwood Estate is 10 minutes’ drive from base for race tracks (horse and motorcar), golf courses (yes, more than one), an aerodrome and fab tours and afternoon tea at Goodwood House – and its not the only stately pile or historical site nearby worth a visit. To give everyone a change of scenery, make tracks for the coast – Bognor Regis seaside resort and its miniature golf, mini railway and boating lake are half an hour away, as is the sandy stretch of Climping beach, and Fishers Farm Park and trips on the South Downs Light Railway are both around 40-minute journeys. Need something for the grownups? Try wine tasting and tours at a handful of vineyards within 40 minutes, or opt for a refreshing beer instead at the Hogs Back Brewery, 50 minutes from base.
