  • Simple field site in Kent with tap and electric supply
  • Brands Hatch racetrack and Bewl Water fishing within 20 minutes' drive
  • An hour by car from Canterbury and Folkestone beach
From Neolithic long barrows to Napoleonic forts, medieval castles to Second World War munitions sites, Kent is a county where the past seems very present. At Lucy's Barn, it's outdoor relaxation as your ancestors would have done it: a field, surrounded by trees and Kent countryside, with a water tap, electricity supply and little else between you, the peace of nature and the plentiful spread of stuff to see and do in the area. Important business first: the nearest pub with food is in Stansted village, four minutes' drive away or a 20-minute walk. If you're into motors, the famed Brands Hatch circuit is five minutes away for race meets and driving experiences or for watery thrills, make for Leybourne Lakes Country Park (20 minutes) for scuba diving, kayaking, windsurfing and the simple pleasures of swimming. The lakes are part of a 93-acre site of woodland, grasslands and marshes, full of wildlife and well furnished with trails for walking and biking. If you're truly addicted to all things aquatic, Bewl Water (45 minutes) is where you go for boating and fishing on the huge reservoir.

Liked: Absolutely amazing site! We are returning customers and will keep returning. A few updates needed but nothing to hinder your stay :). Clean and tidy and always a pleasant stay. We stayed this weekend 21/09 and had a huge family gathering due to family visiting from another country so perfect location.

Disliked: Mirrors in toilets for after showers, fixed toilet seats general update of facilities. But nothing major.

Liked: Flat open field with picnic benches, great space for the kids to just have fun

Disliked: Toilet/showers/washing up facilities. I was aware from reviews these may have not been up to scratch but thought for the price as a test run for our new set up we’d give it a go. The facilities need a revamp and general tidy up/maintenance, was ok for a weekend stay but any longer than that and the site wouldn’t have suited us. Hopefully these are getting the needed upgrade/repairs for the future

Liked: This is our second visit to lucy's barn. Didnt check the showers this time as only stayed 1 night. Last time the showers were cold and kept tripping but new mangement has taking ober so i hope they have sorted that. Was quiet until group booking showed up. Description said no camp fires but people was still doing it as host not there weekends. I found it a bit expensive for the 1 night this time but we had no choice as needed to get away for the night. Just wanted a peaceful evening for 1 night , so ended up going bed early.

Disliked: Host should have informed group booking was coming.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: We had an amazing time we did arrive bank holiday Monday which was perfect as most people had left and we had the pick of the field. We loved the fact electric points were all over the place and taps provided too. It was peaceful the owners were helpful texting in the morning to tell us how to check in. The site itself was lovely picturesque horses near by. We will definitely be back oh and a lovely restaurant in the garden centre please do visit it.

Disliked: I know from previous reviews that people had brought up the toilets. Now our timing at the camp was perfect we never had to queue and we like the toilet blocks. And we also saw they had new toilet block waiting to be installed. The thing we would say is get a mirror on the exit /entrance of the site coming out of there is a bit of a risk and mirror would eliminate that immediately.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. Yes we do have a new toilet block waiting to be installed, we do take notice of our reviews more so negative than the positive, next year we are having a reception and 10 extra toilets. Please do come back and give us your opinion. We have a mirror in the entrance in a tree already, must be that the ivy has grown up around it, this is a very important thing and will be dealt with immediately. Thank you again.

Good site, needed more showers.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Clean site, Level pitch, view of horses, good location, easy booking in. Well-maintained. Friendly staff.

Disliked: Couldn't choose own plot, bit squashed in by neighbours, warned not to use too much electricity neighbours took our tap. Biggest problem was no where near enough toilets, since each bathroom contained a shower we had to toilet in a bucket because of the queues for morning showers. I think 4 toilets between at least 200 people.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Your comments have been noted, this is an issue regarding the toilets has come before us before and will be rectified.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Large level grass pitch. Allowed fires with your own firepit.

Disliked: Very poor facilities. Missing and broken toilet seats, poor drainage in the shower. Poor water temperature (ran freezing cols within a couple of minutes. Sinks initially ran out over your feet then when they attempted a fix just filled with water. Poor rubbish & bins which caused lots of wasps.

Local attractions

If the birdsong on the site gives you a taste to see things wild and feathered, the Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve (20 minutes' drive) is the spot for communing with the kingfishers and hailing the herons, throughout a spread of lakes, ponds, pools and reed beds. Wilder still, Howlett's Wild Animal Park an hour away has gorillas and leopards, moneys and the largest herd of elephants in the UK. To get into Kent's history, you could start way way back with the Neolithic long barrow at Addington (15 minutes), then carry on to Knole Castle (half an hour) to see a 600-year-old building still looking pretty fine in its 1,000-acre deer park setting. For a trip not quite so far back in time, take an hour's drive to New Romney for the start of the famed Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway whose steam engines will puff you pleasantly through the marshlands down to Dungeness. The deserted beach there is well worth a look and a photo opp; the sands at Folkestone (an hour) are far livelier while the Kent Battle of Britain Museum reminds you how this friendly coast was once a strategic frontier. A similar distance from the site, Canterbury took some hits in the war but its 14th-century cathedral (on the site of a sixth-century one) still makes for a fine visit, as do the little lanes in the surrounding old town.
