  • Year-round glamping in the historic Kent countryside
  • A 10-minute drive from Sandwich and Deal
  • Within walking distance of the beach via local footpaths
With smart glamping accommodation, far-reaching country views and footpaths to the Kent coast, there are lots of things to like about Ham Hideaway. To quote the owners, 'roughing it has never been so comfortable' – and if you take a closer look at the photos of these accommodation options, you're likely to find yourself nodding in agreement. All of the accommodation here is ensuite and comes with plenty of outdoor space and lots of fine country views. While it's located about an hour's drive from London, the site is very quiet, as it's far from busy roads in peaceful acreage overlooked by ancient beech trees and rolling farmland. Ham Hideaway is located in the peaceful hamlet of Ham in the parish of Eastry, a larger village just under a mile away where there is a local pub. Getting out to the seaside is easy here, as you can drive down to the coast at Deal in about 10 minutes. Another option is to take the footpath that leads straight from the site to Sandwich Bay via Ham Fen, Kent’s last surviving natural ancient fenland. This is definitely the scenic route, as the fen is a haven for wildlife – keep your eyes peeled and you may even see the Eurasian beavers that were reintroduced here in 2002.

Local attractions

The market town of Sandwich (10 minutes) has plenty to see, including its handsome guildhall, historic toll bridge and the Bulwark, a great green space where you can see the remains of the old town walls. The port of Deal (10 minutes) is also in the immediate vicinity – make sure to check out its pier, beachfront and castle, or head a few minutes' drive south along the shoreline to visit the well-preserved Tudor house at Walmer Castle and Gardens (15 minutes). Kent is also famous for golf, and there are several well-established links in the area that have hosted major tournaments. The Royal St George's Golf Club (10 minutes), Prince's Golf Club (15 minutes) and Stonelees Golf Centre (15 minutes) are all accessible within a few minutes' drive. Head half an hour inland and you'll reach the cathedral city of Canterbury, while heading for the same amount of time along the coast can bring you to Margate, Whitstable or Folkestone and the Channel Tunnel.

Robin's Roost 2 bedroom safari tent

Liked: Peaceful environment during the day, small facility with just 5 tents/cabins. Quality bedding and furniture. Good location for exploring sandwich, deal, Herne Bay, Goodnestone, Rye, Chapel Down winery.

Disliked: Unusual set up with pub next door managing the site but not actually their business. Described as en suite but for safari tents the toilets/showers are not en-suite to the tent, short walk away. No fridge, cooking facilities or water at the tent made staying five days quite challenging. Shame bbq’s are not allowed but understandable. We were made aware on arrival, dogs must be on leads at all times, no exceptions, which did not suit us when staying five days. Accommodation seemed more an add on to the hotel rooms next door where the pub do many weddings, three whist we were there, music can be loud late at night.

Bumble Bee 2 bedroom safari tent

Liked: Location was beautiful and very peaceful, tent layout was perfect and the outside area was a lovely place to spend the evening. Complementary tea and coffee was appreciated

Disliked: Lack of catering facilities - pub was shut and no bbqs were allowed and there wasn’t a fridge so very difficult to manage self catering. Tent really needed airing as all the local manure smells seemed to get trapped in the tent which was a shame
