  • Peaceful and scenic surroundings close to woodlands and beaches
  • Great village shop, pub and takeaway food within five minutes' walk
  • 20 minutes from Canterbury and the beach at Hythe
Come to Kent for scenic and peaceful surrounds for strolling and family days… and might you like a woodland walk or a beach day too? Have the lot at small and serene Knowler Farm, along with a setting right in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty but a nifty 20-minute drive from Canterbury. This is a firmly rural spot, in an area popular with walkers and cyclists, and within easy reach of Kent highlights like Howletts Wild Animal Park and Leeds Castle. The beach at Hythe is 20 minutes' drive away on the south coast and Whitstable is within 40 minutes on the north. (And if you're escaping from London for the weekend, you can zip down here in under two hours: hail the train from St Pancras and get a bus to the farm from outside the Rose and Crown in Canterbury.) The site is on the edge of the quiet village of Stelling Minnis, where there's a great village shop, a post office and a pub. Several good takeaways are within walking distance, and the neighbouring villages have various pubs and eateries, including a pub within walking distance which serves food on some evenings. Davison's Mill, 10 minutes' walk away, dishes up cream teas on summer Sundays and bank holidays (highly recommended), and the site itself has a small café serving up drinks and cakes.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely relaxing site (buttercup site) the other site was full of DOE kids who didn't bother us at all it's so spread out, although the 7.30am rousing cheer from them did come as a surprise and it woke me up. Nice flat camping field, spacious so i'm guessing it can get fairly busy. Clean and warm toilets. Basic showers (one was out of order so i'm glad we were the only ones there or that could get chaotic) great little dressing room with sink. Nice and peaceful. Coffee shop on site. Great location, ideal for exploring the county, village shop walking distance.

Disliked: So its just little things but it kind of impacted our stay when reflecting on it. I should explain the owners were on holiday so they had shut the site down for bookings, which for us was great because there were so few people around, buit maybe things were not as well run.... No one came to greet us we were kind of left to our own devices so we just figured it all out ourselves. Overgrown brambles at gate so it was hard to get on and off the site without getting scratched as they were over the latch. Over grown hedging which meant we couldn't find the water point for the campsite I found it eventually but there was no signage. The shower was great but it was scalding hot. I love a hot shower but even I was struggling to stand under it. The biggest thing for me was state of the washing up area, someone or something had dumped food and eggshells in the sink it had defiantly been there a long time as it was decade and animal had torn open the bin bags and spread food waste and litter round the whole area, not the owners fault but it was obvious no one came to attend to the facilities because it remained like this for a few days then it was just tided up, but not well and there was still nowhere to put rubbish so we had to stack it next to bin again and an animal came again, it started to smell bad by the end of our trip which was really disappointing. Very disappointing and this wasn't seen to properly until the owners returned from their holiday.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We liked the peaceful campsite, and incredibly friendly hosts. The site was good location to explore Whitstable, Canterbury etc and some great local walks.

Disliked: Very primitive facilities. Only 2 toilets which were a bit grubby, and the shower facilities there was only one working and it has just one temperature and no light so difficult to see what you’re doing. Washing up station had no hot water so not very hygienic. Dressing room was a nice idea (hut with sink for teeth and dressing) but utterly filthy. I feel like if you’re in caravan this wouldn’t be issue but for renters it was a rough stay

Local attractions

Nature spotters will find species aplenty around the 124-acre common and the countryside surroundings of local village Stelling Minnis, an ancient pastureland still used for grazing in more modern times. Several ponds on the minnis are home to toads and newts; around the grassland and woodland, look out for voles and badgers, weasels and shrews, woodpeckers, nightingales and barn and long-eared owls. Culture seekers can see shows at the Gulbenkien or Marlowe theatres, both just outside Canterbury, or head into the city to roam around its ancient sites including Canterbury Cathedral. If you're up for hearing the story of how Chaucer developed and wrote his famed tales, the Canterbury Tales tour runs throughout the year daily from St Margaret's Street. For history of a different era, Hawthorne Trench, Elham (10 minutes' drive) is a reconstruction of the Great War trenches of the Somme region that's worth a visit on open days. Those off to the nearest beach at Hythe should hop on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway to chuff along almost 14 miles to Dungeness, via the Kent coastal spots of Dymchurch, St. Mary's Bay, New Romney and Romney Sands.
