  • Family-friendly site on an organic farm in South Downs National Park
  • Hambledon Vineyard five minutes’ drive; Portsmouth 25 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; pizza oven; workshops; communal fridge
For a holiday with a low impact on the environment, book your spot at Rushmere Farm, a small site with undesignated pitches on the south-western edges of South Downs National Park and about 10 miles north of Portsmouth (25 minutes’ drive). The owners, who grow cereals organically, are available and happy to give a tour of the facilities, so guests can learn more about regenerative farming methods and the oat-based drink produced on site. And if the kids are already groaning at the idea of having to learn anything while on holiday, feel free to reassure them that there are heaps of more child-friendly activities on and around Rushmere Farm. Running around on the camping field, for starters (that works for the family dog, too); getting messy with flour as they help to prepare pizzas for dinner (there’s a pizza oven); or joining a woodworking session. Then there’s the exploration of nearby footpaths and bridlepaths. The surrounding area has no shortage of excellent hiking destinations, with Old Winchester Hill (a nature reserve known for its butterflies and assorted birdlife), plus woodland walks in Catherington Lith Nature Reserve and Forest of Bere, reachable within a 15-minute drive. Then there’s the seaside: pebbly Southsea Beach (35 minutes) is a top spot to sample fish and chips (or an ice cream) and you gaze across the water at the Isle of Wight. The site has basic toilets and showers based in an open-sided building, as well as a washing-up area and a communal fridge-freezer. The nearest shop is a half-mile away (five minutes, or 10 minutes on foot) or, for more choice, you can head into Waterlooville (10 minutes), which also has a handful of pubs and restaurants.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Very peaceful, only one other camper on site which was perfect for me. There was no staff on site so I just picked a spot myself which was fine. As noted in the description it’s a tiny site with a Shepard’s hut, a yurt and some other accommodation as well. I was lucky that it was just me and one other camper (and my dog!) it may have felt too busy otherwise but that’s just me being introverted and craving wildlife. Loved the outdoor kitchen, loos and shower were clean and the place just has a peaceful welcoming feel. Nice communal place to sit and have a coffee in the yard. Great little community farm fridge at the bottom of the road too for fresh oat milk and veggies. No wifi but had reception. Would definitely return.

Disliked Nothing! Great place

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Peaceful farm location, stunning scenery. Lots of tea, coffee, kettles, pizza oven. Clean sinks, toilet and shower. Felt safe there camping alone.

Disliked Scarey narrow lanes to get there, as two main lanes were closed.

Enjoyable stay, would visit again in the future

Electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Lovely peaceful site, basic but clean and adequate facilities

Disliked This is not a dislike, but just to be aware that the left hand electric plug socket for campervans at the back of the barn near the yurt is too close to the external 3 pin plugs - the plugs on the electric supply lead for vans are quite long and there isn’t enough space to fit the plug into the socket because the 3 pin plugs are in the way.

Electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Very peaceful, in the middle of nowhere

Disliked Toilet and shower is part of the barn , place looks derelict, spent 1 night then stayed in family grounds , very narrow lanes for motorhomes

From the manager: This campsite is not for everyone and clearly not suitable if you are expecting a touring site. Whilst we are able to drive a combine harvester along all of the lanes, it is narrow in places. I would not describe the barn as derelict, though it is a old cattle shed in which there are 2 toilets and a shower in an open sided barn, as described. If you are looking for a nature friendly campsite with not many other guests we would love to have you, but if you are looking for mod cons you may be better booking somewhere else or one of our cottages.

If the ground is dry, please drive through the yard (between the cottages and the shepherd's hut) and into the immediate camping field. There, you can choose an area with enough space for seven other people, or if it's cramped, the site will open up the next field.
