Maple Field Camping: Wild Garlic in Vernditch Woods on the Parish Boundary

General

  • Hedge-lined four-acre park with views over Martin Down Nature Reserve
  • A 10-minute drive to the New Forest and 30 to Bournemouth beach
  • Kitchen, ping pong, art classes, bushcraft sessions and guided walks

Zip around a trio of counties on a trip to Maple Field Camping, in the north-west corner of Hampshire and on the border with Dorset and Wiltshire. Stays here are in a four-acre field surrounded by tree hedges, about a mile from the main A354 road and 10 minutes’ drive from Fordingbridge.

The views are as snazzy as the location – look out from the top of the field over the chalk grasslands of Martin Down Nature Reserve by day, then turn to the heavens and admire the inky black skies while listening to the crackle of the communal firepit at night.

While it may seem a hol here’s just about relaxing in the wilds and nothing more, this isn’t strictly the case – the middle of the field’s kept clear so kids can run wild, and activities include guided walks and art classes. Bushcraft sessions, where attendees craft spoons from sycamore, build dens and conjure up fires, are organised as well. Ping pong sessions are also on hand, as are tables where kids can create arty masterpieces.

A spacious timber barn at the park contains toilets and showers, and a kitchen is also available to use, with kettle, fridges and freezers – a handy place to prep produce plucked from the site's veg garden.

In your free time, rove the Roman road on the parish boundary and see the polished flints and shoots of wild garlic they left behind. Wanders are also to be had in The New Forest, 10 minutes’ drive away, and across the sandy beaches of Bournemouth (half an hour).

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The toilet facilities are closed until May 28, 2021. Guests will need to use their own facilities.

The shower facilities are closed until May 28, 2021. Guests will need to use their own facilities.

Quiet site, good location, ideal for a one-night stay with young nephew as a first-time camping experience. Activities on offer for children. Table tennis table indoors (just bring ball).

    Disliked:

Only one indoor toilet and shower (combined) so could get busy. However, two additional Portaloos on site.

Basic site with basic facilities but sufficient for most short stays.08/25/2020

The field is convenient for the forest and the owner is working towards longer term improvements.
The site is basic but has a toilet and shower and additional portaloos outside.
A kitchen area is available for washing up and there is a communal fridge.
Pitches are unmarked, which is fine if you have a tent or camper with driveaway awning.
You can have bbq/fire and logs are avaible at £5.00. Some limited foodstuffs are available(pasta/sauces etc) and payment is on trust.

    Disliked:

There is no host presence on site, although the owner did meet and greet people during their stay.
Not sure about cleaning regimes and required to bring own wipes/sanitizer etc.

We were unfortunate having only two nights stay with a large group of young people next to us who were noisy and inconsiderate of others on both nights ignoring the lights out at 10pm and no music.

Surrounded by beautiful countryside and so nice and quiet. Nick the landlord very friendly. Very casual set up and not packed like sardines.

    Disliked:

From the top of the field there are amazing views but all places taken. It would of been nice to be able to pitch in the middle/top so as to get the view as it would of still left plenty of room for children to play in the field.

The refuse area was a bit untidy and also very full.

Location - really beautiful villages nearby, close to New Forest with lovely swimming spots.

Facilities - there's only one shower, which I guess could be added to. Other facilities are great - freezer, fridge, plenty of washing up facilities, table tennis + craft and bushcraft/forest school activities.

Relaxed vibe, people were friendly, lots of space (which is something given half the world are camping due to Covid)

Nick - the owner is a lovely chap with lots of local knowledge.

    Disliked:

Remained pretty loud on the campsite quite late into the night. I guess its a tough one balancing everyone's expectations. Given the owner doesn't live onsite as best as I can tell, it was tricky for him to respond at the time, when noise went past the curfew. That said, to get a spot on a campsite during the pandemic, at relatively short notice, was welcome.

Local attractions

Forge a path to Fordingbridge (10 minutes' drive), the northern gateway to the New Forest, to tramp across the Georgian stone bridge over the River Avon or step things up a notch at the waterpark with a bit of paddleboarding, kayaking and wakeboarding.

For a bit more getting wet, swims and paddles on Bournemouth beach are half an hour away (or 45 minutes on the X3 bus), while Dorset’s Lulworth Cove – a site famed on social media for its particularly scenic stretch of sand – is an hour’s drive. Durdle Door's worth dropping by around here as well (55 minutes) to snap pics of its natural stone arch while on a cliffside wander along the chalky-white coast.

To continue in a more sedate vein, slope over to Salisbury (20 minutes): this city houses the tallest spire in Christendom, a functioning 14th-century clock and an original Magna Carta copy in its cathedral.

Must see

  • Breamore House (5.6 miles)
  • Wilton House (7.3 miles)
  • Salisbury Cathedral (7.6 miles)

National Trust

  • Little Clarendon (7.7 miles)
  • Mompesson House (7.7 miles)
