  • Traditional and quiet site in the South Downs National Park
  • Half a mile from the South Downs Way; 20 mins' drive from Winchester
  • Eco-friendly site with firepits provided and bike hire available
Grab your ‘cracking setting’ scoresheet and arm yourself with a pen, for Upper Parsonage Farm is a place that’s likely to win many points indeed. First up is the category of rural location, and it’s a good tally on that front: the site is part of a traditional 1,400-acre working farm that’s been owned and run by the same family since way back in 1904. Sheep sometimes take up residence next door to the pitching field, and guests are welcome to watch the harvest being brought in from the crop fields if they’re staying at the right time. It’s not tricky to see why the family have stayed put here for so long, either: you’d be unlikely to move in a hurry if you’d found a spot that’s both within the South Downs National Park and part of the East Hampshire Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Getting out to explore such surrounds is straightforward, as the farm is half a mile from the South Downs Way, and the friendly owners can rent bikes and dole out local tips on the best things to see and do. Next up is handy access – and it’s another strong showing here, with Clanfield’s village shops four miles away, larger Petersfield five miles away and the A3 a 10-minute drive away for more extensive jaunts into the Hampshire countryside or over to Winchester and Portsmouth. And finally, bonus points can be had for the vibe on site, which is laidback and eco-friendly – it’s carefully managed to protect local plants and wildlife, with a plastic-free ethos, firepits to keep campfires contained, and recycling wherever possible.

Local attractions

Rural rambles or rides are a must, of course. If you’re not sure where to aim for, perhaps pick either the Butser Hill National Nature Reserve (five minutes’ drive) or Queen Elizabeth Country Park (15 minutes), or set forth on the car-free Meon Valley Trail from Clanfield. Upper Parsonage Farm may have been in the family for well over a century, but it’s a youngling compared to Butser Ancient Farm (10 minutes), where the archaeological displays go all the way back to the Stone Age, and the activities include ancient skills such as foraging, cooking over fire and building rafts. Once satisfied that you could survive in days of yore, take in some of the history of intervening centuries with trips to Winchester’s medieval centre (20 minutes), the historic dockyard in Portsmouth (20 minutes) or Jane Austen's House Museum (25 minutes), where the famed novelist penned some of her best-loved books.
