  • Family-run eco-friendly site on the banks of the Thames
  • A mile from East Tilbury village; 40 minutes' drive to Southend-on-Sea
  • Next to a nature park and on the Thames Estuary Path
Views of the Thames? Yes, very much so – Essex site Thamesview Camping is right on the banks of the mighty river, looking out over Coal House Fort in one direction and the Essex Wildlife Trust Thameside Nature Discovery Park. A mere hour’s journey from London (by car or public transport – the rail station is a 15-minute walk away), this is a prime spot for those seeking an easy escape from the capital, or guests hoping to mix up a city break with some rural fresh air. Waterside footpaths, cycle routes, birdwatching and fishing are all popular activities here, as is simply looking out over the water to see what you can see (there’s a colony of seals out there, and you may also spot Benny the Beluga swimming about…) As this family-run space is primarily focused on the area’s natural attractions, it’s no surprise that the team have set it up to be as eco-friendly and peaceful as possible. No loud music is allowed here, and guests are encouraged to be mindful of the environment and each other, keeping dogs under control and following the countryside mantra of ‘leave no trace’. A local wildlife guide is on hand if you want to get to know your surroundings a little better. Campfires are welcome too (or essential, some might say) and the folk on site can help out by selling you locally sourced firewood with virtually no carbon footprint. Other supplies for campfire cookery can be picked up a mile away in East Tilbury (or you could skip the cooking and head to the local pub, 10 minutes’ walk away, instead…)

What customers say

A quiet, roomy, well-kept eco-campsite with spaced-out pitches, fire pits and picnic tables. Enjoy the nature, wildlife, and Thames walks. Facilities are clean, especially showers and composting loos, though a few had minor availability issues. Mostly peaceful, a bit of noise from others sometimes. Good value, hands-off management.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Showers were clean, good washing up facilities and nice to have a bench and firepit at each pitch. Nice coastal walks and friendly pub 10 minutes down the road

Disliked Owner responded poorly to large group making noise till after 12.30am despite claims of otherwise. Woken up again at 6.30am by the same group the owners claimed they'd ask to leave .Nobody on site to deal with the issues, only person we saw was bombing around the site on a quad bike half heartidly checking the toilets. Toilets in principal are a good idea but if you are a male needing to sit down on them, you either have to hold your genital out the way or have it sit in the trough were the wee goes.
Complained but got the same kind of response you see on some of the reviews on Pitchup. Owner offered us a free stay, but with a site that feels like they are putting in minimum resources to gain as much as they can, why would we take them up on the offer when there is far better out there. Every bit of contact is done via text, eventually blocked the number on our return. The owners response to us saying we'd contact Pitchup up was, " if you was in a holiday resort on a beach you would not get refunded if another guest made a noise",
AVOID !!!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We liked the pitches and how they are separated off with long grass. We enjoyed walking along the path from campsite to marshland and view over the docs.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked •Great location: Easily accessible from London and simple to find with clear directions provided well in advance.

•Helpful management: When our pitch was missing a fire pit, staff responded promptly and directed us to a spare one.

•Scenic setting: Beautiful views of both sunrise and sunset, with a lovely walking path nearby.

•Clean facilities: Toilets were checked regularly and maintained to a good standard.

Disliked • Noise from large groups: During our weekend stay, several large groups occupied multiple pitches and were noisy late at night and early in the morning, despite campsite rules. This can be hard to police but did impact the experience.

• Inconsistent showers: While there are three, the water temperature is hard to regulate—either scalding hot or freezing cold.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked I like how the campsite is geared towards sustainability and eco-friendliness. Loved the location and the wildlife, wild flowers, birds and insects, real nature! Walks around the Thames, and East Tilbury which I found to be a welcoming place with good shops and good food at the nearby pub. Thanks for a lovely time and I hope to return before long.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Loved the view from my pitch and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. A stone throw to the Thames with more views and great walks and bike rides. Lots to see if you're into nature, ships and history or just want to relax. A weekend wasn't enough, so I'll be coming back.
Well maintained and managed site with the owner even checking if everything's alright.

Local attractions

Start local by exploring the Thameside Nature Discovery Park, next to the site – footpaths and bike trails crisscross the 120-acre site with lots of wildlife to spot in this Site of Special Scientific Interest. Alternatively, give your legs a really good stretch with a walk on the 27-mile Thames Estuary Path, which runs alongside the site. Stop by at the Coalhouse Fort (15 minutes’ walk) for a touch of glamour – it’s regularly used as a film location (perhaps most famously for Batman Begins). The Thames opens out into the sea, of course – and not that far away, either. Set off for a seaside day with outings to Canvey Island (25 minutes’ drive) or Southend-on-Sea (40 minutes). Both have indoor attractions too, which is handy for less clement days – Canvey Island Transport Museum and Southend’s Sea Life Adventure are good picks for such times.
