Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (wild)

Liked: Clean and tidy toilet and shower. Good washing up area with washing up liquid and brushes. Firepits were provided. Woodland pitches. Communal firepit. Josephine didn't mind us going to look at all the horses!

Disliked: Didn't really dislike anything but it's a working farm so there were lots of vehicles coming and going to and from the stable, and tractor noises.

Camping pod

Liked: The venue was very quiet, lovely walks around and very laid back A great place to explore nature and lovely sunsets Basic pod you does have micro-wave and a very good fridge you will need to bring your own food but a short drive to Tiptree and a couple of disposable BBQ's solved that

Disliked: The surrounding area - it was difficult to find dog friendly places to eat

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful farm. Camped in the wooded area with a group and we saw lots of wildlife. Owners responded quickly to queries before and during stay. Minor issues encountered were resolved very quickly. There is also a big tesco only a short drive away, which was nice.

Liked: Small and quiet campsite. Plenty of space with a choice of either camping in the woods away from the toilet/sinks or on grass next to the toilets.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We stayed here with family who had young kids as well. Honestly so peaceful and quiet. There is nothing to do apart from walking which was perfect for us, we took toys for the kids to keep them entertained. Brilliant shower and toilet block. Shower was very powerful which I didn’t expect so that was great! Washing up facilities were brilliant. Fire pits available and you can buy a massive bag of wood for the evening. We luckily had the place to ourselves so again was so peaceful. Wonderful back to basics campsite. Will definitely book again!!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Clean pitch and big fishing lake.

Disliked: Facilities were VERY basic, you are pitched in a field and all you have is a toilet. The lake was beautiful but be warned monsters lie beneath…..so bring a big net and some strong line. The lake is a bit of a walk from the campsite so you may need something to put your gear on. If you are bringing children make sure you bring plenty of activities to do and don’t rely on the internet because signal is shocking (not the campsites fault I know).

From the manager: Hi thanks for your review. As I mentioned you’re very welcome to drive over to the fishing lake so it’s not too far to walk from the campsite. There are some very big fish in there so yes definitely need to be prepared but there are also some much smaller fish if that’s all you’re wanting. I do state on pitch up that it is very low key here and back to nature so hopefully it doesn’t come as a disappointment. Many thanks.

Local attractions

Hunt down some historic sites… you could climb up England’s highest Tudor gatehouse, the Layer Marney Tower (roughly half an hour's walk), or have a bite to eat with some Tiptree preserves in the secret tea garden that belongs to the family’s old farmhouse over at Tiptree Tea Room, Museum and Jam Shop (five minutes' drive). With the historic town centre and castle in Colchester (20 minutes), there’s much for history fans to have a nose around. Families will find plenty to do there too, though, as Colchester Zoo (10 minutes) is likely to entertain any small family members… The classic seaside, too. West Mersea (20 minutes) has all the staples of that, from beach huts to a jetty that’s just the place to whip out a line and give crabbing a go. Craving some good, unfiltered nature? There’s plenty to go around while on cycles or walks around the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (30 minutes), and the RSPB Old Hall Marshes (15 minutes) or Abberton Reservoir Nature Discovery Park (15 minutes) too – these are two prime spots to spy on wildlife or birdlife.
