Escaping to the Essex countryside means different things to different people. For some folk it’s a chance to take it easy – visiting gardens, taking gentle strolls to the local pub and seeking out cute little tea rooms – while for others it’s all about packing days full of activities like wild swimming, canoeing and long bike rides. One thing that surely links together all guests at Novoli Farm, though, is time spent in the gorgeous Essex countryside looking out over the lovely vineyard views and Blackwater estuary (from the top of the hill). Feel free to also pop down to New Hall Vineyards, 200 metres away, for a tasting should you wish to experience the vines more closely. Prefer a pint of beer? No problem – this site is on the edge of the village of Purleigh, about 10 minutes’ walk from the village pub (and the shop, where you can pick up supplies for your picnics and barbecue evenings). There’s also a bus stop in the village for services to the riverside town of Maldon, and the site is just next to the 45-mile St Peter’s Way footpath – so you’ll have options for getting around if you don’t fancy driving. This peaceful spot is an adults-only setup, but dogs are permitted. Things have been kept fairly simple on the grass pitches, but guests do have access to basic, mains-connected toilet facilities and mains water (please note that there are no showers, however).

  • 10 kWh per day of electricity is included. Any further usage is metered on site at £0.397 per kWh and must be paid when requested on site, before check-out.

Lovely wee spot for a break. Great countryside, handy for a pub and vineyard. Clean loos, sound owners. Bit of road noise and no showers, but pitches are grand and it's a relaxing place to be.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Easy to find and the misty morning view of the horses was lovely to wake up to! All the other campers were also very respectful of one another which is always appreciated when travelling solo. I liked how small the site was as it made it very easy to navigate. Not very many campers so there was never a queue for the toilet - big bonus! Super close to where I needed to be and lots of great options for food and walks nearby.

Disliked The toilet sits in a way where you can’t actually sit on it properly with the door closed plus the toilet seat itself was hanging off so it was very precarious. I didn’t expect the main road to be so close to where I was sleeping which woke me up a lot in the morning. There was also construction going on at 8am on the Saturday which was very loud and annoying when you’ve arrived late and want a bit of a lie in (especially after being disturbed by the main road)

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Loved the peace and quiet of the site. Able to kick back and relax. Toilet was clean and well stocked, not having a shower wasn't a problem as the friendly owner allowed me to put up a pop up shower tent xx

Liked Lovely being in a field next to the horses. Toilet and cold water washing up facilities always clean. Nice walk to the vineyard for wine tasting and a nice roast in The Bell. Hook up great and got a text for access to the site.

Disliked The electrical hook up pitches are quite near the road so some traffic. The none electric pitches set back a bit so quieter

Liked Location was easy to get too and didn't feel cramped despite being a smaller campsite. The toilet is fully flushing (not a portaloo) and toilet roll and soap was provided.

Disliked No showers, however for short stays or those who don't mind bucket showers this doesn't make a difference.

Local attractions

The maritime town of Maldon (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to start your tour of the area – perhaps with a stroll along Hythe Quay to see one of the UK’s largest collections of London barges. You can also launch canoes or hire bikes here, or join boat trips out onto the Blackwater Estuary. Just outside the town, the Museum of Power is worth a visit to see the miniature railway and working steam pump. For more watery activities, head to Hoe Mill lock (10 minutes), a well-known local wild swimming spot, or the historic harbour at Burnham-on-Crouch (20 minutes). The Dengie National Nature Reserve (half an hour) is a good place to be if you’re into your birdwatching. Gardens more your thing? RHS Garden Hyde Hall (15 minutes) is the big draw nearby, with several themed areas keeping things interesting all year round. The three acres at Beeleigh Abbey Gardens (10 minutes) are also worth exploring, or you can try the trails of Danbury Country Park (also 10 minutes) if you’d like to see something wilder.
