  • Dog-friendly East Sussex farm site with alpacas, sheep and camels
  • A 15-minute drive from Barcombe Mills and half an hour from Brighton
  • Firepits provided; several pubs within walking distance; trails nearby
From wild swimming, hiking and mountain biking to touring castles and museums, Tomkins Farm is well situated for a pretty chirpy rural break in East Sussex. Your headquarters will be a farm site with grasslands (occupied by alpacas, sheep, Jeffrey and Batu the camels) and spacious pitches that are nicely set up for families, large groups or whoever else you’re bringing along, including dogs. There’s a lot of scope for blood-pumping activities from here, whether that’s following miles of footpaths, mountain biking down the South Downs Way (the national park is 10 minutes’ drive away) or swimming and paddleboarding at Barcombe Mills (15 minutes). You can also hire a rowing boat from the Anchor Inn pub (15 minutes) and go looking for herons and cormorants on the River Ouse. On site, relaxation comes in the form of fresh air, open spaces and regular starry skies, thanks to the low light pollution. Each pitch has its own firepit and space enough for on-pitch parking. Although basic, the facilities are functional, with full flushing toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area with hot water. Craving something to eat from a classic country pub? The closest pub is just 10 minutes’ walk away, with several others in Newick (40 minutes’ walk or a five-minute drive). As for local produce, you’ll be able to sniff that out at a farm shop five minutes’ drive away.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: I had a wonderful experience camping here, an absolutely ideal spot to pitch up tent as the ground was moist and mostly flat, so very easy to get set up. The views were lovely, as the sky was starry at night and very green & sunny in the day. The owner was lovely and accommodating as they promptly helped me get settled in as well as helping with firewood later on. They recommended good walking areas as well as a fantastic local pub nearby (The Five Bells) which was honestly delicious food. The camping facilities were great, hot and cold water, good setup of toilets, showers & wash sink areas. Really very good quality. I only wish I could have stayed longer, but I definitely will again at some point.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The site was well kept, the additional services like pizza and coffee were fantastic, lovely stay!

Disliked: The pitch we were given was always in the shade which was a bit of a shame, as there was space it would have been placed elswhere

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Loved the size of the pitch and that you provided the fire pit. The place had a great feel to it and the staff were so so friendly. We absolutely loved it, had the best time! Showers were super cool by the way they were open so the sun was on your skin as you’re washing! Amazing!

Disliked: The only shame was the No music, but we understood and didn’t need it anyway. No hot water at the washing up tap. Toilets very close together, didn’t feel very private.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: A lovely campsite. Grass pitches with individual fire pits. Facilities basic but also rather charming. Showers and washing up station dependant on solar power so on a dull day was quite cold but it certainly woke me up! I loved the lake and the alpacas and camels. Great dog walks. Friendly and helpful staff and Philip the owner kindly helped some teenagers set up camp on a wet and windy Sunday night.

Disliked: Nothing at all.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Owner is really nice and very helpful, location is great for long walks etc and campsite is clean.

Disliked: For the cost there are very few facilities, only one toilet block. There isn’t much to do for young children, no park or anything unless you’re on a walk. Expensive for what it is.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Odd that you say there is only one toilet block? There are two with a total of 7 toilets (all flushing) and two urinals? All cleaned and maintained regularly by myself. We don't say there is a park for children? We are not allowed to have a play area due to council restrictions? The majority of children play in the woods without issue. There is a public play area 8 mins walk from the campsite?

Huge pitches, clean toilets, quiet in evenings, relaxed friendly owners, lovely surroundings…

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Huge pitches, clean toilets, quiet in evenings, relaxed friendly owners, lovely surroundings

Disliked: Nowhere to empty or clean toilets Just a trickle of hot water at washing up points, and no plugs Expensive logs for fire pit. Old washing machine drums for fire pit a nice idea but doesn't quite work as difficult to build a fire without burning a lot of wood!

Local attractions

Run by the National Trust, Sheffield Park and Garden (10 minutes’ drive) has a large landscaped area spreading around four lakes, plus swathes of parkland. The kids might want to spend some time exploring the woodland play trail, with den-building materials, wood carvings and, of course, a bunch of trees to climb. Speaking of the kids: if they’re into Winnie the Pooh, they might feel right in their element at Ashdown Forest (15 minutes), where children’s author A.A. Milne set his stories. They can go hunting for favourite places like Pooh Sticks Bridge and the Heffalump Trap, while the adults take in the glorious High Weald landscape. Whatever the weather, the seaside city of Brighton (half an hour) has plenty to keep you busy. On sunny days, you can unfurl a towel on the pebbly beach or check out the rides and arcades at Brighton Palace Pier. If you’d rather be indoors, you can visit the spectacular Royal Pavilion or the SEA LIFE Brighton aquarium.
