  • Swish glamping site with well-kept shepherd’s huts in a woodland glade
  • In the High Weald, a 10-minute drive from Bewl Water countryside park
  • Units include a real double bed and have access to a shared kitchen
Walking boots at the ready? They’ll be needed for a trip tramping through the topnotch terrain surrounding Hopgarden Glamping, in a private woodland glade in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You won’t have to pack much else besides clothes, footwear and personal bits and bobs for your trip though, as the shepherd’s huts here have access to a kitchen containing crockery and cutlery as well as tea-and-coffee-making facilities. They’re also cosily furnished with a double bed, a couple of small armchairs, a pullout table, a mirror and a wardrobe, plus a Smart TV with built-in DVD player. On arrival, meander over to the shared bathroom hut around 20 metres away to freshen up in the shower or to wash off the mud after walks in the East Sussex surrounds (miles and miles’ worth of public footpaths and bike routes are a breeze to access from here). On return, lie back on a sun lounger in your private grassy area just outside the hut, pondering what to cook up on the gas barbecue (or which pub to dine at – there’s a 16th-century in within walking distance and plenty of other options less than a 10-minute drive away). Afterwards, settle in beside the firepit in the open air then head indoors to warm up further next to the electric woodburning-style stove and listen to the DAB radio. Don’t forget to charge up your phone in the USB sockets ready to get the GPS on the go during more wanders the next day. This site also has free wifi but with such a lot of space on offer for playing ball games, stellar sunsets to admire across the fields and wildlife to watch out for – including deer, foxes, rabbits, pheasants, badgers, squirrels and partridges – you might not get round to doing much browsing…

Local attractions

While on a hol at Hopgarden Glamping, seek out some of Sussex and Kent’s finest National Trust-registered private country estates, as well as a whole host of scenic landscapes and historic towns. Bewl Water is a 10-minute drive (or a 35-minute wander) along quiet lanes for days of fishing, walking and cycling, while the Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (15 minutes' drive) has a collection of conifers worth admiring while picnicking. For urban escapades, Royal Tunbridge Wells (20 minutes) is a popular place for pootling around The Pantiles, the colonnade-covered Georgian shopping area, or lunching in one of the independent bars and restaurants. Hastings and Maidstone (45 minutes) are both easy to access for more town times, while heading towards the coast leads to Rye (also 45 minutes) with its cobbled lanes and 14th-century tower.
