  • Family-run East Sussex glamping on the edge of a woodland near Brede
  • Rye, Camber Sands and Bodiam Castle within a 20-minute drive
  • Spacious accommodation with views over the Brede Valley
All the fresh air and scenery of a stay under canvas, combined with the comfort of a cosy cottage break – that’s the idea of the glamping setup at Barefoot Yurts. And the owners of this East Sussex family-run site have certainly achieved this aim with their smart and well-equipped glamping options. This location is within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, five minutes’ drive from the village of Brede and 15 minutes from Rye. It’s a peaceful and private place on the edge of woodland and with lovely views over the Brede Valley – a splendid spot for either a family holiday or a cosy romantic break. Much effort has gone into making the accommodations here nice and comfortable – each one has bed linen provided for the comfy bed(s), and a campers’ kitchen is provided with cooking utensils and handy things like a fridge. The tents are built on wooden decks to keep you insulated from the ground below and provide space for sitting out to soak up the views and the peaceful atmosphere. It all adds up to a rather excellent place to spend a few days unwinding, whether your plans are mostly to stay put or to get in lots of outings. If it’s the latter, your schedule may well feature beach days in Winchelsea or Camber Sands, bike rides around Bedgebury or a wander around the gorgeous Great Dixter gardens. And it’s quite possible that it might also include the half-hour amble to the local pub for a pint…

Local attractions

Pretty Rye (15 minutes’ drive) should certainly be on your to-visit list when staying here – the town is a little medieval gem packed with cobbled streets, historic buildings and independent cafés and shops (most notably its antique shops). A little way out of town is Rye Watersports (20 minutes), where you can have a go at windsurfing or kitesurfing in the harbour. For more coastal days, head to the shingle beach in Winchelsea (15 minutes) or scramble through the sand dunes at Camber Sands (20 minutes). Steering away from the coast, there are lovely forest walks and bike rides to be had at Bedgebury National Pinetum (25 minutes), plus a Go Ape treetop course for the daredevils. Back down at ground level, you might like to board one of the steam trains run by Kent and East Sussex Railway (15 minutes), explore the fairytale-like Bodiam Castle (15 minutes) or stroll around gardens at Great Dixter House (10 minutes) and Sissinghurst Castle (half an hour).
