  • Nearly wild pop-up site in a hay field with a woodland and wetland
  • Surrounded by country walks and a 10-minute drive from Battle Abbey
  • Quiet and back to basics, with village pubs 20 minutes’ walk away
It’s a simple life at Glottenham, a low-impact pop-up site in the East Sussex countryside. The pitches, set in a 12-acre field, are surrounded by countryside walks where the family can trot between villages, pubs, cafés and farm shops. Visiting Battle Abbey and the site of the battle of Hastings is a dawdle too; they are only 10 minutes’ drive away. It's also the quiet life at Glottenham. Designed for families, the semi-wild site has large, open spaces, streams to paddle in, and a woodland and wetland with plenty of wildlife. Quiet groups are welcomed and parties and amplified music are banned. There’s also a quiet early morning and night policy. Good shut-eye and relaxation is all the rage… This quiet environment is also exactly why you’re likely to see wildlife. Take a little stroll around the wetland area behind the camping field and keep your eyes peeled for buzzards flying overhead. If you’re up early, you might catch sight of an early-morning deer. An early-eve campfire (hired from the site’s honesty shop) is a great way to bake or roast fresh produce from local farm shops. If you’d rather have a steak or something else from the hands of a skilled chef, there are pubs and restaurants within walking or driving distance of the site, including in the village of Robertsbridge 20 minutes’ walk away. This is a back to basics, no frills place, exactly how the guests at Glottenham like it. The facilities consist of a double composting toilet, cleaned daily, and a hot-water outdoor ‘safari’ shower. There are two standpipes which provide fresh drinking water. Buy firewood, kindling and charcoal from the honesty shop. Cars can be parked next to your tent.

Local attractions

Quite the history aficionado? Rye (half an hour’s drive) is jam-packed with historic sites like Mermaid Street’s medieval houses, a Norman church and the 14th-century Ypres Tower and Rye Castle Museum. A stunning moated castle Bodiam Castle (10 minutes) will be a must-visit too, along with The National Trust’s Scotney Castle (20 minutes), a country house with gardens which have been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest – now, that’s something unusual. Pry down south for art, shopping and the seaside: Hastings (25 minutes) and Bexhill (25 minutes) are fine candidates. With East Sussex’s only sand dunes, Camber Sands (35 minutes) is another candidate. If you like an active holiday, get stuck into paddleboarding in Bodiam (10 minutes) and Go Ape or hiking in the conifers of Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (15 minutes). Go for a stroll – or two or three – in Pashley Manor Gardens (15 minutes) too.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We, as a family live the off-grid style camping and have camped at many sites where it is back to basics with just compost toilets as the facilities.
The best part was that the limit the number of pitches, which meant we were very spaced out and once dark, all you really saw were the campfires glowing in the distance.
Ground was very lumpy which made pitching a larger tent very hard. Would recommend an Inflatable mattress to get round this.
Honesty shop - so nice to see it being used, although be warned it literally is only coal, kindle and logs (there is a farm shop up the round - maybe opening times could be added to the board outside the honesty shop).

Disliked: Grass around the circumference of the field and in pitching areas could do with being kept cut shorter, along with paths being cut in through the middle to make a path to the toilets - the field is full of clumps of thistles and nettles so you had to navigate round these to get to the toilets. Even with wellies on, they were taller than the toddlers wellies, which then resulting to banshee wailing as their knees fell victim.
For a zero manned site with very basic facilities the cost is a little high.
