  • East Sussex meadow camping with South Downs views near Lewes
  • A 15-minute drive to Drusillas Park, and 25 minutes to Brighton
  • Large flat pitches with an adventure trail for kids; group-friendly
Near Lewes in the South Downs National Park, Yamp Camp Firle is a family-oriented sort of place – pitches here are in a remote area on the Firle Estate but also close to the seaside at Brighton for fun-filled days on the beach. There’s a woodland adventure trail at the estate, and the site's secluded position well away from any roads means that kids have more than enough space for a safe run around. With the South Downs on hand as well, active families can also explore a new walking route every day. But Yamp Camp Firle isn’t just about families. A segregated area is dedicated to adults-only camping if you’re looking for a bit more peace and quiet, and there are also separate spots catering for groups – both large and small – looking to pitch up together. Grass pitches are spacious and each comes with its own firepit. If you’d care to spark up the barbecue and get grilling, a farm shop (and cider barn) is 10 minutes’ walk away for a source of fresh food. After a decent pub meal instead? The Ram Inn at Firle (half an hour’s walk) comes highly recommended, but make sure to book before you make that walk across the park if you're after a meal. Please respect the site’s mantra of ‘leaving no trace’, so wildlife can safely come back onto the camping field when you are gone.

Local attractions

Hiking jaunts into the South Downs National Park can start straight from the camping fields, and there are many different paths to choose from. Options local to the campsite include the Glynde and Lewes Circular walk, which takes in hill forts and an Elizabethan mansion, or the Southease, Rodmell and Lewes Brooks trail along the River Ouse and through pretty Sussex villages. It’s an easy hop to the beaches, pier and amusement arcades of Brighton (25 minutes’ drive) with the kids, or the quieter beach at Cuckmere Haven (half an hour) backed by the chalky-white Seven Sisters cliffs. And a visit to Drusillas Park (15 minutes) is a great treat for younger children, with its fairground rides, animal encounters and keeper experiences Time for some adult days out? Head to Middle Farm (10 minutes’ walk) for a spot of cider tasting, or if wine is more your thing, the winery at Albourne Estate Vineyard (25 minutes’ drive) is also open for tours and tastings. For a dressy night out, book opera tickets for Glyndebourne (10 minutes’ drive), and take a picnic if it’s a sunny evening.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Plenty of space (both overall site and size of pitches), pleasant setting, toilet and wash facilities decent quality, good location for coast.

Disliked: Expensive.

The policy of no refund on booking within 4 weeks of arrival is pretty ridiculous in my opinion and not something I've seen with their competitors.

No rubbish disposal facilities.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The area was really spacious and loved that it felt quite private from the general public. Compost toilets were kept clean most of the time and was always stocked with toilet paper which was really nice! Thank you! (We brought our own toilet paper regardless)

Staff were very friendly and welcoming, came over to see if we needed any wood etc and it wasn't a bad price, we made 3 bags of wood last two nights. There's a nice walking trail too. The pizza van coming on the Saturday night was a lovely touch also, great pizza and cheesy garlic bread. Showers also done the job, no complaints there. Overall very chuffed with our weekend experience here and would certainly come again!

Disliked: Portaloo toilet had no liquid in so couldn't flush it, was not usable after one day. Having no bins caused a massive problem for us as we were a huge group, had lots of bottles, bbqs, food etc and we couldn't fit all those bags in people's cars (due to the amount of camping gear we already had) We had to drive around Lewes on the saturday trying to find big bins so we could chuck these bags away and it was not easy.

Liked: Lovely spacious site. Warm welcome from host. Showers were lovely and warm. Stunning views. Beaches are a short drive away. Loved my weekend there. Weather was brilliant.

Disliked: Maybe think about putting a potaloo on the opposite side of the field. But not a massive dislike

Liked: Fire pit, lovely surroundings, very clean. Laid back without silly rules. Really nothing not to like about this place.

Disliked: Would have been good to have a rubbish skip as with all the camping gear etc, was difficult to get rid of rubbish. Ended up taking trips to lay-by rubbish bins with what we could not get into the cars.

Liked: Yamp camp Firle has a name that sparks joy. The views were lovely, there was plenty of space and the facilities were great. The host was warm and welcoming and we had the best time!
Had a flock of geese fly over and spotted a couple of hawk-moths at charlesten Estate which were beautiful and very a unusual find!
