  • Peaceful simple pitches at an East Sussex working farm
  • Half an hour's drive to south coast beaches and Bluebell Railway rides
  • Firepits to hire for campfires; village pub 20 minutes' walk away
You’ll be in for a true slice of country life on a stay at Heronsdale Farm Campsite – pitches at this East Sussex site are set up in a three-acre field that’s part of a working farm just outside the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As this is a working farm, it comes with all the trimmings like livestock and tractors – so while kids and well-behaved dogs are welcome, you’ll just need to keep a close eye on them. The camping field is a little bit away from the action though, and it’s pleasingly flat with wooded areas that offer a bit of shade and shelter. Life is nicely simple here, but all the essentials are provided – you’ll have access to compost toilets, hot showers, drinking water and waste disposal facilities. Campfire evenings are actively encouraged, with firepits to hire and logs for sale (you’ll just need to bring your own marshmallows…) If a country pub is also an essential for your break, you’re in luck – a 20-minute stroll across the fields gets you to the village of Waldron, where you may catch sight of the local cricket team in action on the green before you head into the village pub. Chiddingly and East Hoathly are both a couple of miles away for more pub options (and a village shop in the latter). The bigger town of Heathfield is 10 minutes’ drive away when you need a supermarket or a wider selection of shops.

Liked: Loved this site - pitch up where you like. Lots of space overlooking fields. Hot showers and compost toilets are provided plus hot water for washing up. Facilities and site were very clean You can hire fire pits £6 for your stay and buy logs £8 a bag. Fresh eggs can also be purchased. There’s some brilliant walks from the site to do of different lengths and a pub 20 mins away serving great Sunday roasts. This quiet and relaxing site run by super friendly hosts will become our “go to place”

Disliked: Just a few things we noticed may improve the site - lighting up the toilets inside which would prevent a nasty mess we found from a previous camper!! Also some sensor lights around the wash up area would be helpful. Also large groups when camped together need to be reminded quiet time is at 10pm not 12 midnight!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely level field with easy access and views across towards Polegate and Eastbourne. Showers really good as well as washing up facilities. Never a fan of compostible toilets, but they serve their purpose, none the less.

Disliked: No lighting at the toilet area at night. Solar lights would have made a difference, but a torch sufficed.

This is some splendid countryside, so those of you in search of walks, bike rides, horse rides and other outdoor antics should find plenty of suitable spots nearby. The farm is just on the edge of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the South Downs National Park is close by too. Also not far off is the south coast – a drive of a little over half an hour gets you to walks around the Seven Sisters cliffs, Cuckmere Haven and Beachy Head or days on the beach in Bexhill-on-Sea and Eastbourne. If you’re into poking around on fancy estates, pay a visit to Rudyard Kipling’s former home Bateman’s (20 minutes’ drive), the National Trust estate Sheffield Park (half an hour) or the gorgeous gardens of Wakehurst (40 minutes). If you’ve got kids to entertain, tastes may skew more towards days out at Knockhatch Adventure Park (20 minutes), animal encounters at Drusillas Park (20 minutes) or rides on the Bluebell Railway (half an hour).
