  • Small Lancashire working farm 20 minutes' drive from Skipton
  • Half an hour's drive to Malham Cove and Janet's Foss
  • Peaceful grass pitches with Pendle Hill views and easy access from A59
Now, here’s a nifty spot for a break near the Lancashire/North Yorkshire border – Rowan Bank Caravans is in a handy location at a small working farm in between the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, putting you within easy reach of all sorts of walks and other outdoor activities. Getting out to see it all should be easy enough too – although the surroundings here are thoroughly rural, the farm sits in the middle of a triangle of A roads for easy outings, with the closest one being the A59. (Don’t worry about road noise though – they’re close enough to be convenient but not so close that they cause any disturbance…) One of the things you’ll see as you take in the scenery around the site is Pendle Hill, the famed home of the witches – it’ll take you about 25 minutes to drive to Barley to pick up the trail to the top. A similar length of drive gets you to some of the Yorkshire Dales’ highlights too, including Malham Cove and Janet’s Foss waterfall. Skipton, meanwhile, is about 20 minutes away and has plenty of shops, restaurants and takeaways as well as a castle. In fact, the area has quite a few places to eat out, buy local produce or get a good drink – and the best way to find them is to chat to your site hosts David and Carol, who are happy to give you all the local info. Pitches at Rowan Bank have been kept fairly simple in style, in keeping with their peaceful farm atmosphere, but you’ll have access to a toilet block and a washing-up area. Dogs are welcome if kept under close control.

Local attractions

Skipton (20 minutes’ drive) is a good place to start – not only is it a handy shopping town, it’s also got a castle to visit (with a woodland walk), an indoor pool and boat trips along the canal. Clitheroe (also 20 minutes) is another good town to visit, home to what’s said to be the smallest Norman castle in England, with a playground and landscaped gardens. If you’re here for the country walks, you’ll have heaps of choice. Popular trails include the climb up Pendle Hill (25 minutes), the walks around Malham Cove, Malham Tarn and Janet’s Foss waterfall (half an hour) and the wooded walks of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes). For an easier way to see some of your surroundings, take a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway (25 minutes) or set off for Settle (25 minutes) to experience some of the scenic Settle-Carlisle line.
