  • Walks five minutes’ drive, including Pendle Hill and sculpture trail
  • Pubs within walking distance; dogs permitted on a lead
Families should hotfoot it right now to Lancashire’s Whitehough Outdoor Centre. Operated by Burnley FC in the Community, the centre is a 22-acre outdoor education facility in untamed Pendle countryside. Set in gorgeous Lancashire woodland and fields with spectacular views of fells and valleys, there’s lots of open space on the camping field, with ample room to park your car beside your tent if the weather permits (and if it doesn't, there's a car park). The grass pitches are all sheltered by trees, and there are toilet facilities on site, along with a designated washing-up area. Spark up a barbecue for more outdoor fun around the campfire with the kids, and if self-catering isn’t your style, there are pubs within a five-minute drive or 20-minute walk from the site. If you want to get stuck into activities, there are around 20 activities which can be booked in advance (subject to instructor availability and for groups of 10+ only), including crate stacking, obstacle courses, archery, high ropes and orienteering. Some practical bits and bobs now: this is a dog-friendly site, but your four-legged pals must be kept on leads at all times on site and always cleaned up after, please.

Liked: No crowds. Good, sunny weather first day, awesome nature around with beautiful forest and river close to where we stayed. Lovely campfire at night. Unfortunately, rain came soon after and we decided to go home. But the bonding experience and laugh will remain unforgettable.

Liked: Fantastic, spacious, quiet location with all the basic facilities you need and friendly staff. Unable to drive to your pitch which could be an issue depending on how much equipment you have. My son was particularly happy to see a football net which kept him entertained

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Peaceful, quiet , friendly and only a 15min walk from the village. Went for one night with my daughter so we could walk up Pendle Hill and stay over there. The site was really nice. It's a no frills site definitely but that really suited us for some quality time away.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Location- stunning views, lovely walks, isolated enough to enjoy the surroundings and for it to be peaceful. Yet an only 8 minute drive to the nearest shops ect. Pub a 20 minute ish walk. Local tractor event was on during our visit which was a great addition. Facilities- for 20 pounds a night the toilets were clean and tidy, electric shower was hot and powerful plus electric sockets available inside these areas to charge/ use appliances. Camping ground- on a hill so wouldn't recommend bringing the car onto the field in poor weather. Cars managed fine to get on/off field during our stay in dry weather though. We decided to leave the car on the car park which was around 30 sec/1 min walk to our pitch. Dog friendly. BBQ area and shelter on field, also football nets for the kids to play on. Quiet site with only 4 tents on during the weekend. For a family with a 1 year old it had decent baby changing facilities and even spare nappies available if required which was a nice touch. We would definitely recommend and are planning our next stay again soon .

Disliked: Toilet doors in the women's toilet had one cubicle missing a lock and the other cubicle lock wouldn't close properly.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Site wasn’t overcrowded, great location. Liked that fire pits and bbqs allowed, excellent scenery. Would definitely return so long as they make sure they don’t overcrowd the field as this was the main selling point for us!

Disliked: Wasn’t able to have the car next to the tent, and no electric, so wasn’t able to charge phones (we plugged them in at the local pub to charge). Some visitors did ignore the rules against this which was frustrating for us who followed them. Showers and toilets very dated and not very clean unfortunately, but it is camping so can’t grumble too much! One couple were making lots of noise until the early hours on our second night which was frustrating but not the sites fault.
