  • Wildlife haven on a family-run farm site in the Cumbria countryside
  • A 20-minute drive from the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed; pub 20 minutes' walk away
Join the ranks of the farm animals at Puddlemire… and make your way to your chosen plot by gator or quad bike. Here, you'll join a friendly, family-run site in the Cumbria countryside, resting between lakes and dales and bordered by a trickling beck. A 20-minute drive from Yorkshire Dales National Park and Lake District, this is a wildlife haven 10 minutes' drive from Kirkby Lonsdale and well situated for walking or cycling your way around literary villages and hilly crags, or past ribbon lakes and hay meadows… whichever takes your fancy. This is a simple site with warm showers and flushing toilets. Campfires and barbecues are allowed on site, as long as they’re kept off the grass. Both make an excellent choice if you've already stocked up on supplies from a couple of shops within a 10-minute drive or organic goods from the farm shop within 15 minutes’ drive. If you'd rather head out, there are also several pubs within 15 minutes' drive, where you can either nurse a pint or fuel up for the next day's activities.

Liked: The campsite had wonderful views. Had the option to have fire pits which was great as the stars at night are remarkable. Lovely sleeping next to a stream

Hobby Wood non-electric grass tent pitch (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked: As a family we love camping here. The campsite is always clean and very well maintained. Shirley is an amazing host, she is friendly and great at communicating with us. The kids always look forward to coming here and don't want to camp anywhere else. They always say 'we're home' when we arrive. The campsite has flushing toilets and showers. The views are spectacular, especially late at night when the cloud clears up, you can see the edge of the milky way.

Hobby Wood non-electric grass tent pitch (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Really lovely quiet campsite with a family feel by a river. The owner was great and even gave us a lift with the gear down to the pitch on her off road vehicle. The facilities were basic but clean and the site was not too crowded with plenty of space between tents. The kids all seemed to make friends and were playing with each other.

Disliked: A little hard to find the campsite.

Hobby Wood non-electric grass tent pitch (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Stunning location and well kept site. No dogs or cars - safe. Lovely to go somewhere that isn’t dominated by dogs! The owners kindly help out with getting your things up to the car park. Good communication from owner. Just the right amount of facilities- all spotlessly clean. Friendly accommodating owners. Stream running through the site. Good space between pitches, space to run around and play. Loads of wildlife. So tranquil sitting outside with a beer and campfire watching everything. We saw a deer on the way up there. Flat pitches. No WiFi but you can get 4g! Fire pits very reasonably priced compared to other places. Would definitely go back.

Disliked: Just points to note rather than criticism - Roads are quite narrow and steep immediately around the site. No noise curfew - reliant on people being considerate, sadly a group of 8 lads 2 pitches down from us were not considerate, played music till 1 am and talked loudly until gone 2 am. Couldn’t say anything as no curfew to refer to in the Ts&Cs.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. I am sorry you were kept awake by fellow campers, most of our campers are considerate, I always speak to large parties to ensure they keep the noise levels low & music off by 10pm. I also try to make sure families with young children are a distance away from adult/solo campers, as their requirements often differ greatly. My feedback for this weekend was that the boys bahaved well. However I do understand with so little other noise on site any conversations/music do travel. I hope this experience does not stop you from visiting again, we would love you to call again & enjoy our usually peaceful site.

Hobby Wood non-electric grass tent pitch (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Beautiful site, facilities were great.

Disliked: Although slightly tongue in cheek, as soon as the lady who owned the site laid on us she had clearly made an instant judgment about what kind of people she thought we were. Just because we were a group of young(ish) lads that had brought some beers and speaker, I’m not sure it warranted being instantly labelled and treated as if we were disrespectful and there to cause an issue. I think we deserved to be treated with slightly more respect than that. Im sure she has had to deal with idiots many times before, it just meant our stay started on a slightly sour and uncomfortable note, that was all.

From the manager: Thank you boys, So glad you enjoyed the site, and I hope you had a great time. You are right, the beers and the speaker did put me on my guard,I was so pleased I could rename you the quiet tent by the end of your stay. Thanks for visiting!!

An excellent, quiet site in a beautiful location.

Alders Edge bell tent

Liked: Just returned from a thoroughly enjoyable stay at Puddlemire campsite. I booked one of the bell tents and it exceed my expectations. All of the extra equipment and small touches that were in the tent were excellent and my kids are asking already when we can return. The private facilities (composting toilet, shower, water tap and recycling bins) were very handy and well maintained. The offer of help to transport my bags and food down to the tent in the owner’s buggy was much appreciated and my boys enjoyed the ride down the hill in it too! We’ll definitely be back.

Hobby Wood non-electric grass tent pitch (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked: The grounds are beautiful and very well kept. Facilities were clean and the shower was HOT! Shirley was so friendly and helpful when we arrived. I was meeting my sister there so she allocated us a lovely spot where the kids could enjoy the stream. The was a hammock by our pitch which was awesome, and got used a lot. We planned to take walks and explore but ended up just staying on site as the kids were very happy running around and looking at the sheep in the next field. Would definitely recommend for families.

Disliked: Only possible downside would be the fact you can’t park by your tent. But in the end it wasn’t such a problem and not really too far to walk.. I suppose it’s just worth noting if you’ve got little ones.

Hobby Wood non-electric grass tent pitch (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked: The campsite exceeded our expectations by far. Lovely grounds with very clean toilets and shower room. I appreciated the mirror in the toilet room as I’d forgotten mine. Shirley was very helpful with our bags when we arrived, and the kids loved being driven down the pitch in the RCV! Loved the stream (hours of entertainment for the kids).

Disliked: Nothing!

Route directions

Exit the M6 at Junction 36, taking the A65 towards Kirkby Lonsdale. You will go past the Plough Hotel on your right. Take the next turn on your right-hand side (just past a layby, with a white bungalow on the corner and a signpost for Hutton Roof). Follow this road, and when it bears sharply to the left, do not turn left but carry straight on in front of the row of houses. Follow the road until you reach a T-junction and then turn right. Keep bearing right, passing Rose Cottage; the site is at the next right-hand turn.

Local attractions

Where to go first? If you want to test your aim, clay pigeon shooting could become your next hobby at Crabtree Clay Shoot (five minutes' drive; check ahead for opening days) or climb the local limestone-paved paths at Hutton Roof Crags (10 minutes’ drive). For countryside enthusiasts, the Lake District (20 minutes’ drive) and Yorkshire Dales (20 minutes) national parks each have their own draws. In the Lake District, the fells and lakes offer ample opportunities for sailing, rock climbing, or cycling. Meanwhile, in the Yorkshire Dales, you can track down waterfalls and old barns. Northwards, more walking and cycling trails await at Whitbarrow National Nature Reserve (25 minutes), this time through ancient woodlands and limestone. While you’re there, visit Sizergh Castle (15 minutes) and stroll the stately grounds and estate. If you’re longing for a sandy beach, there are long stretches of sand at Silverdale (30 minutes) and Sandside (20 minutes). Head further south and you’ll come to Morecambe (30 minutes), where another bay competes with a 12th-century castle, prison and a stroll-worthy promenade for your attention.
