Pub exterior

General

  • Small pub site in Burgh by Sands, 20 minutes' drive from Carlisle
  • Hadrian's Wall Trail and Cycleway just outside the pub
  • High-quality, locally sourced food and cask ales available on site

Set your sights on Cumbrian stays? This nifty spot in Burgh by Sands has easy access to Carlisle and the Solway Firth, making it a top choice for hols spent on England’s northern edge.

The Greyhound Inn is a fine country pub in the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Rural rambles are definitely on the cards here, as this wildlife haven is home to historic hamlets, nature reserves, sand dunes and salt marshes. Dogs are welcome at this site, and you can be pretty sure they'll appreciate the wide range of local explores to be had hereabouts.

This landscape is rich in history, too: the Hadrian’s Wall National Trail and Hadrian’s Cycleway pass right by the pub. King Edward I also died in the village, and a monument stands at the spot where he fell in the nearby marshes.

With a toilet, disabled facilities and free wifi, this site's well kitted-out for back-to-basics stays. The on-site pub is a friendly spot that's popular with visitors and locals alike, with cosy corners where you can unwind and sample cask ales and a south-facing outdoor decking area for alfresco dining. If you're planning on picnicking when out and about, the nearest supermarket is about 10 minutes' drive away.

Please note

The restaurant is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Tents are not accepted at this park.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

The toilets on site are closed between 12am and 7am.

When we arrived 4pm ish, husband went into the pub, chap said he would be out to see us shortly, but he never appeared. Dispite the advertised "the toilets on site are closed between 12am and 7am" and knocking on the door in the morning, the remained locked. by 9.30 we gave up and departed to find a public loo.

Hospitality in the pub was very good and great care was taken to explain the Covid restrictions in force. The evening meals were good value and very tasty.
The Village of Burgh by Sands is an interesting place particularly when looking for Roman stonework which is scattered throughout the walls and buildings in the settlement.

    Disliked:

On reflection the electric hook up was connected to a 13A domestic extension cable so not what I would call totally weatherproof, but otherwise worked ok..

The toilet facilities were right at the door of the pub so access was easy and they were very clean and well kept. The hospitality and food in the pub were great, especially the waitress who sat and had a chat to us. Great for a stop over on the way to/ from Scotland.

    Disliked:

Small area in the car park more like a pub stopover than a camp site. That said we would go again.

Local attractions

Carlisle, a sizeable city with heritage sites aplenty, is a 20-minute drive away. The castle, a fearsome fortress whose inside walls are covered with eerie carvings made by former prisoners, once held Mary Queen of Scots. Other spots of interest include the city’s red stone cathedral and Tullie House, a museum and art gallery with artefacts from the days when Carlisle was an outpost on the edge of the Roman Empire.

Visiting twitchers staying in the area should flutter over to RSPB Campfield Marsh (25 minutes), a hub for wading birds. For man-made flights, head to the Solway Aviation Museum (25 minutes), a heritage centre located on the same site as a working airfield.

Day trips to the Lakes are also a doddle: Bassenthwaite Lake (40 minutes) is a top spot for watersports, while peaceful Derwentwater (50 minutes) has handy waymarked paths for lakeside strolls. While you're here, head to Keswick (50 minutes) to sort boat trips, to try out the local adventure park or to sample the wares at a local Lakeland brewery.

Must see

  • Carlisle Castle (4.8 miles)
  • World Famous Old Blacksmith's Shop Centre (5.8 miles)
  • Birdoswald Roman Fort (18.6 miles)

National Trust

  • Wordsworth House and Garden (21.7 miles)
  • Acorn Bank Garden and Watermill (26.2 miles)
