  • Simple and scenic site on a working farm overlooking Derwentwater
  • Keswick town centre half an hour’s walk; ferry terminal 20 minutes
  • On-site café; mountain walks and watersports nearby
Would you like to wake up to a view that will (most likely) have you ooh-ing and aah-ing? Settle in for a stay at Green Eskin Camping. Surrounded by mountains and overlooking Derwentwater, the Lake District’s third-largest lake, its view should be worth bragging home about – especially as Highland bulls with grand horns roam the surrounding fields too. Set on a working farm, the flat, well-drained camping field also has the advantage of being just half an hour’s walk from Keswick town centre. Theatre By The Lake, showing plays on two stages at the shoreside, is a 20-minute walk away, and the Keswick Ferry terminal is five minutes extra from there, sorting your transport across Derwentwater. There are many places to try watersports in the area, too, one being around 40 minutes’ walk from the site at a canoeing and bushcraft activity centre. Hikers, good news: popular mountain walks begin nearby, and you will be able to set off with your morning coffee already drunk, as Green Eskin Camping has an on-site café. For a return meal, you could stop by a restaurant in Keswick on your way 'home'. Aside from the café, amenities at Green Eskin Camping are on the simple side. There are portable toilet facilities, but no showers. You will need to bring drinking water with you, as there is no drinkable water point on site.

Local attractions

In the Lake District, bagging fells is quite a big thing. So, bag the first of your trip at Catbells (15 minutes’ drive), a steady uphill hike that’ll give you lovely views down over Derwentwater. If you'd prefer to spend your days in the bike saddle rather than hiking boots, head for the mountain-biking trails of Whinlatter Forest (20 minutes) to weave downhill at speed. If history interests you, you may want to pay a visit to Castlerigg Stone Circle (10 minutes) on a hill east of Keswick. The views are quite something, with Helvellyn in the distance, but the main attraction is its circle of 38 standing stones thought to be from the late Neolithic times. Another spot that should be worthwhile is Honister Slate Mine (25 minutes), the last working slate mine in the country. Tours will take you underground into the mine, and the brave among you can try activities like via ferrata or ghost tours. Closer by is the Derwent Pencil Museum (35 minutes’ walk), a niche place that unravels the story of pencils since 1981. You could pair this one with a trip to Puzzling Place (half an hour’s walk), which is full of optical illusions for pictures you’ll want to send to your mates.
