  • Family-run farm site at the foot of Whinfell Beacon
  • A 25-minute drive from Windermere; 15 minutes from Kendal
  • Hiking and cycling nearby and five miles from the Yorkshire Dales
With the Lakes on one side and the Dales on the other, it’s no surprise that hikers and cyclists find themselves so nicely placed for take-off at Cockin Farm Campsite… The family-run farm is tucked in a gorgeous spot at the foot of Whinfell Beacon, surrounded by slopes of grazing cows and featuring sunsets that will surely have you looking forward to golden hour drinks all day. It’s a 15-minute drive to Kendal, with its climbing centre, shops, restaurants, weekly outdoor farmers' market and the Brewery Arts which hosts live comedy, music and cinema. The farm is on the outskirts of the Lake District National Park, so whisk yourself westwards to the lovely Lake Windermere (25 minutes' drive) for walks along the shore, watersports or a visit to The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction in Bowness-on-Windermere. All this, and you still haven’t heard it all… because Cockin Farm Campsite is dog-friendly and just six miles away from the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where there are miles of moors, slopes and valleys. Plus, this small slice of the countryside often has barn owls flying over the fields, as well as other wildlife like hares. Disconnecting is very much encouraged – not that you’ll need much encouragement other than the idea of tasty barbecues and evenings spent around a firepit (both are welcome on the farm). To help you along with such things, there's a small shop on site selling essentials like water and logs, along with local produce such as honey and eggs. The site is a Wanderlust Camping Club certified site, so the additional fee added onto your booking gives you membership to other eco-friendly stays across the UK.

The Blue Door shepherd's hut

Liked We stayed in the blue door shepherds hut, it was very clean and has a very useful kitchenette with everything you would need for your stay

Bed was super comfy and clean, toilet facilities were clean and eco friendly, shower was clean and nice too!

Fire pits and bbq friendly site

The hosts were super friendly and helpful, salt of the earth type of people, they checked in on us and made sure we were okay and happy with everything and couldn’t be more helpful, even their dog Sprout was a true little gentleman

There was a tin of homemade cookies left in the hut for us on arrival and they were absolutely delicious, I’d return just for them

I’d recommend this place to anyone and will definitely be booking again

Lovely remote location that’s only a 15 min drive to Kendal centre and great genuine hosts that couldn’t be more accommodating

Thank you for being so nice and for having us! Hope to see you again soon

Disliked We disliked nothing about our stay!

From the manager: Thank you so much for the lovely review - please come visit again soon!

Non-electric grass and earth campervan pitch

Liked The glorious site, the quiet, the welcome from the hosts, the basic eco-friendly facilities - a very beautiful place to be.

Disliked A little tricky to find a flatish space but not really a problem. We were in a Berlingo and the track was fine but I wouldn't want to do it in a big van as the turns are tight and it's quite narrow.

From the manager: Thank you - we were glad you enjoyed the beauty!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked tl;dr: everything. If you're looking for a non-commercial, cozy, camping site with beautiful views all around, this is the place.

Warm showers, fresh water and washing up areas are one minute walking down a path with fairylights, there's a compostable toilet on a side of the site, super well kept.

Emily and Pete are so helpful, quick to respond and welcoming.

From the manager: So happy to hear you enjoyed your time with us!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked A really AMAZING campsite with fantastic hosts and great facilities for a camping night away. Easy to find with a great welcome email and even better welcome in person by Em and Pete. Great addition to have logs, eggs and honey also for sale as well.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Really amazing campsite, greeted by Pete on arrival and was told where everything is. The actual campsite has lots of space so never feels very full, incredible views for both sunrise and sunset. The facilities are very good and nice eco touches, even at night the path to the showers has nice fairy lights guiding you. Phone signal also a amazingly good considering the locatiuon. Added bonus that they sell their own honey and eggs from the farm!

Disliked Nothing cant wait to return

From the manager: So happy you enjoyed your stay! Hope you like the honey, the bees have been busy so far this year!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Simple no frills,
can use BBQ or fire pit
friendly owners

Disliked Only one toilet(shed outhouse over hole in the ground not a plumbed in toilet)
ground not level literally a field on a hill.
no level space found needs proper toilet facilities and level pitches for tents.
closet shops 15min drive so dont forget anything.

From the manager: Hi, we are really upset that you didn't enjoy your stay. We pride ourselves on being a back to nature, environmentally friendly site hence the composting toilet (which is clearly advertised on our listing). If you had mentioned you were unhappy with the ground we could have recommend a pitch that met your requirements.

Not recommended.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan pitch

Liked The price

Disliked Facilities were fairly non-existent, field was rough and uneven. Having stayed at other pop-up farm campsites, thus one was a poor effort. Im a seasoned camper and used to wild camping so wasn’t expecting the earth from this site, but at half the price it would’ve been expensive for what it was.

From the manager: Hi, I am so sorry you didn't enjoy your stay. We pride ourselves on our clean facilities whilst allowing campers to feel connected with nature whilst experiencing the peacefulness of our little piece of the Lake District, so have been extremely upset to hear you had a bad experience. Please feel free to reach out directly as we would love to hear your recommendations for improving user experience.

Local attractions

In the Lake District National Park, there are lots of lovely lakes like Windermere (25 minutes’ drive) to explore. Being the largest and longest lake in the Lake District, it offers a variety of activities including rowing boats, sailing trips, gorgeous walks and delicious coffee shops on its shoreline. For a peaceful stretch of the legs, try the path along the west shore of Windermere from Ferry House to Wray Castle (otherwise 45 minutes), a turreted Gothic Revival house from Victorian times with lake views and woodland trails. It's not just the lakes that you’ll want to explore, however stunning they are. Rydal Cave (45 minutes), a man-made cavern in an old slate quarry, is a great pitstop on your rounds over at Rydal Water, often visited by the poet William Wordsworth. As for the Yorkshire Dales, one of the closest spots for guests at Cockin Farm Campsite to explore is Cautley Spout (35 minutes), the highest waterfall fully above ground height in England.
