Pitch with a view

  • Peaceful touring pitches on a family-run working farm with great views
  • Bassenthwaite, Ullswater and Helvellyn within a half-hour drive
  • By the C2C cycle trail; 10 minutes' walk from a village shop and pub
What would you say to a stint at Howbeck Lodge, a peaceful site on a family-run working farm at the northern tip of the Lake District? If the answer is 'yes, please', then you can look forward to lovely views over the river that runs past the pitches and out to the green countryside beyond… This may be a rural site, but it’s a most conveniently located one too: the M6 (Junction 41) is easily accessed 10 miles away, and the village of Hesket Newmarket is 10 minutes’ walk away for a village shop and pub. The C2C (Coast to Coast) route passes just by the farm as well, so this makes a handy stopover for any cyclists making their way across the country by pedal power. Days out are just as handy: it’s straightforward to get to several of the northern lakes (including Ullswater and Bassenthwaite) and peaks like Skiddaw and Helvellyn, or to Hadrian’s Wall or the Solway coast. Carlisle is half an hour’s drive away if you feel the need for a bit of city time. The farm’s serviced pitches are dog friendly and have access to facilities including a toilet and shower block a short walk away.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (family)

Liked: Quiet campsite, children liked the animals and (self made branch on rope, by previous visitors I would guess) tree swing at the back of the grounds

Disliked: Pile of manure near camping field
Dead/Rotting sheep on show
Smell of the above mentioned
Toilets needed cleaning
Only 1 toilet for 2 fields of campers but 4 showers?
We stayed here back in 2023 and it was a lovely site, not so sure I would return after my recent visit.
Didn't stay the 2 nights like we intended
I understand it's a working farm but to have dead sheep laid rotting was disgusting to see, especially with children walking around who aren't used to seeing such things.

Two self contained shower toilet blocks for 10 Pitches, kept clean.
Goats, calves and lambs to see. A small play area in with the tent pitching area. Village pub close by.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (family)

Liked: Lovely rolling site with flat pitches and areas for groups, near to a river and lots of trees present for some shade.
Animals on site is nice, like ponies and goats. Friendly farm cat and dog sometimes poddled over.
Cute and rustic looking building for camping facilities near a shepherds hut.
Friendly owners

Great community pub in Hesket Newmarket just 10 mins walk. Good locally brewed real ales and food.
Lovely walks from campsite inc up onto fells, or quiet lanes for cycling were great too. Rolling terrain and pretty villages. The hike up the fells from Mungrisdale towards Blencathra is great.

Disliked: 2 groups were present for the Saturday night which we were there, one of which created quite a lot of rubbish. This didn't affect us as such, but it was around the facilities and we collected much of this up as it was drifting towards the lovely river.

It felt a bit that because we were the only tent left on site for the next 3 nights it was low priority to clear the rest of this up or clean the facilities. They were OK, but didnt appear to have been cleaned (or the van facilities, as we were advised we could use too).
There is one toilet for campers, and two (in with the showers) for the vans and caravans, so may be a challenge if site full..although we didn't see the site ever full.

Fully-serviced gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Loved the peace and tranquillity of the site. Level pitches were big, great location for walking break. would stay longer next time. Facilities were adequate.

Disliked: Not sure what to do when we arrived. Another camper advised we could select our own pitch, which we did. Not really a problem, but a bit more information on the booking confirmation to advise this would have been helpful.

Fully-serviced gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: 5/5 – Great Little Site with Friendly Owners and Full-Service Pitches

We stayed at this site recently and, despite some unexpected car trouble that meant we had to leave the van a few extra days, the owners couldn’t have been more accommodating. They kindly allowed us to keep the caravan on the pitch until Saturday free of charge – something I’m very grateful for and absolutely worth a glowing review.

The site itself is simple, but that’s exactly what I was after – no unnecessary frills, just peaceful surroundings and solid facilities. The ground is layered in thick gravel, which made it tricky if you wanted to put up an awning (I didn’t on this trip, but worth noting for future stays). That said, the pitches are fully serviced with water and good quality electrical hook-up – we never had any issues with the power.

The facilities, while basic, were of good quality with two separate toilet blocks each with self contained sink, toilet and shower and the highest quality for a caravan site and the whole site had a calm, quiet feel, with sheep out in adjacent fields. We had a full 4G signal thanks to a nearby tower, which came in handy as the on-site WiFi didn’t seem to be working when we arrived. Upon noting this to the owners, they immediately said they’d look into why it wasn’t working – I didn’t check again after this as the mobile signal was excellent and I just used that instead for the caravan TV.

The owners are a young family – likely with farming roots – and while they seemed a little reserved at first (probably not used to many guests just yet), they warmed up and were really helpful once we had a few conversations due to the car issues. I really can’t fault them – they were understanding and supportive during a stressful situation.

I returned on Thursday evening to collect the caravan, though I didn’t knock on as it was getting late by the time I arrived. But I just want to say a special thank you here for accommodating me in my time of need – your kindness made a difficult situation a bit easier, and I truly appreciate it.

I’d absolutely stay again and would recommend the site to anyone wanting a straightforward, peaceful base with all the essentials in the north lakes. Once the car is sorted, I’ll be back! - Hopefully with the Mrs who would love to see the Highland Cow.

Sorry the Photos that I took are not great as they where just out of the caravan windows.

Local attractions

If you're looking to spend some time by the water, Bassenthwaite Lake (20 minutes' drive) will surely be on your list. This most northerly lake in the national park is very quiet, with few towns and villages around its shores. Head here for walks along the path that runs along the western shore, or stick around to discover the animals on display just to the north of the lake at the Lake District Wildlife Park (20 minutes). It's a short drive to other top attractions too, the likes of which include historic Dalemain House (20 minutes), the Lakes Distillery (20 minutes), mountain peaks like Helvellyn (30 minutes) or Skiddaw (35 minutes) and the far-famed Derwent Pencil Museum, where you can learn all about graphite. Birdoswald Roman Fort, part of Hadrian’s Wall, can be reached by road in 50 minutes as well. Cumbrian life isn't all about the fells and lakes, though: you can take yourself off to Carlisle (30 minutes) for a more urban day out at the castle, cathedral and Tullie House museum, or you could get to Cumbria's gorgeous coastline in about 35 minutes for days out on the sand.
