  • In the Cumbrian hills a couple of miles from Witherslack
  • A 15-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands and 25 from Windermere
  • Campfires allowed: firepits for hire and wood for sale on site
How might you fancy a peaceful and well-equipped Lake District place to stay, among the peaceful hills of Cumbria, and with easy access to famed Lake District destinations including Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Cartmel and Kendal? Bed down at quiet and secluded Moss Howe Farm for all the above, a couple of miles from local village Witherslack and 15 minutes' drive from Grange-over-Sands. This is an excellent setting for campfire evenings: guests can arrange firepit hire by adding a request to the Moss Howe team when booking, or use their own barbecues as long as they're raised off the ground and placed on top of the firepit using the supplied grill. A shop and pub are nearby in Witherslack for supplies and other eats. Moss Howe is well equipped, with modern shower, washroom and toilet facilities, plus a tumble dryer in the ladies' shower block, and dishwashing basins just outside. Charging facilities are available for an extra fee; freshwater taps are around the accommodation areas, and wifi is at reception.

Terrace non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Wow what a fantastic site, owners couldn't possible be more helpful. Site is quite and situated off the beaten track and has to be the most tranquil site I have visited in the Lakes. Great size pitches fabulous vibe with shop and Pizza available. Showers were steaming hot and not on those silly push button things. This is a great campsite the way they used to be. This is not the site you want if you are looking for full amenities bar on site screaming kids etc this is a site to visit if you want the true Lakes experience not the sanitised version.

Disliked: Nothing Fab Site

Lodge

Liked: Loved the little cabin and our outdoor set up! So cute and has everything you need. All done really well. The little farm shop was great too. Friendly service and well equipped with all sorts of cool stuff! Also a great location only 20 - 25 mins from the pretty lakes.

Disliked: The shower facilities. The shower is in the equivalent of a toilet stall next to the toilets in a very large VERY COLD room. There is no way to keep the heat in while you shower and no where to "step out" and dry off with your belongings stored in a seperate place to stay dry. We were also a bit disappointed with the view from our cabin as there wasn't one, so couldn't take in the pretty countryside.

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch (large)

Liked: Toilet block old but very clean. Great little shop.

Disliked: In the middle of nowhere, pubs and shops miles away, nothing on site and not much info for walks etc. No chemical waste point and water tap in middle of site. Would not use again other than an overnight stop.

From the manager: I'm sorry you you felt the site was 'in the middle of nowhere' which 'nothing to do'. Perhaps it may have been wise to have looked at our location before you booked to stay with us? We do after all describe ourselves as 'off the beaten track' which is the very reason most who come and stay absolutely love our little site. Thank you also for leaving your pitch today in such a state we won't be able to book it out now for the rest of season. Perhaps you may be better off on a camping and caravanning site next time. For those looking for a quiet off the beaten track camping experience with easy access to all the Lakes has offer then we will not disappoint. If however, you are looking for a fully services camping pitch for you motor home then I would suggest you look elsewhere. We look forward to give you all a friendly Moss Howe Farm welcome.

Lodge

Liked: We have stayed in a couple of pods now, and this was certainly the most well equipped! The bed was extremely warm and cozy, the heater greatly appreciated and the kitchen area meant that we could cook some decent meals on the nights we didn't eat out. Everything felt very clean and well organised - the shop and food van were a brilliant addition!

Disliked: The wifi didn't quite reach where we were, but it just meant we planned our routes before setting off and was actually nice to not have phones as distractions!

Electric optional grass tent or campervan pitch (medium)

Liked: Hot showers, covered communal benches, well stocked shop, clean, quiet, friendly, organised, spectacular scenery.

Disliked: Not a dislike, but advice for others. Check which way the sat nav brings/takes you if in a campervan, as one of the roads has 25% gradient with tight, narrow bends.

Liked: Setting and views. Peaceful. Lovely free hot showers. Washing up area was very clean with lots of hot water. Friendly staff. Well stocked small shop.

Disliked: Take insect repellent - I got badly bitten in October! WiFi and phone connection is dependent on your pitch - not available over the whole site.

Electric optional grass tent or campervan pitch (medium)

Liked: We stayed here with our puppy for two nights at the end of September. Really great site, check in process was really easy and everything was made clear by the staff. Nice facilities and very clean. Had a lovely little shop selling some local produce and essentials that you can easily forget when camping. Great food wagen that we enjoyed pizza’s from on our first night and the breakfast baps were amazing on sunday morning. In a beautiful location and within easy reach of the rest of the lakes. Would defo recommend and stay here again.

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch (premium)

Liked: A lovely site, we had a wonderful stay, the facilities were great, showers lovely and hot with good pressure! Friendly staff. Nice size pitches with decent gaps between.

Disliked: I can’t really think of anything we disliked, if I had to say something, and this is probably due to all the rain, the pitch we had was quite boggy/muddy. But not a major problem…

Local attractions

A particularly scenic way to explore these surroundings is atop a horse, so make your way first to the Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, 10 minutes' drive away, for rides through the woods or on the local fell. A big sheltered arena is also at the centre if you'd like to practise your cantering first. If horses aren't for you, take to the car instead for the spectacularly scenic 25-minute drive to Windermere and Consiton Water via the A590, among the views of the east side of the lake to Bowness, Troutbeck and Ambleside. You'll need at least a day at Britain's biggest natural water lake, for steam ferry rides from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, or boating trips around the water and Windermere's 18 islands. Also have a potter around Lakeside Pier at the southern end of the lake (the ferry from Bowness finishes here), for the Aquarium of the Lakes showcasing Windermere's wildlife. Hikes, mountain biking and lake and mountain views are at Grizedale Forest, 35 minutes away.
