  • Cycling and hiking direct from the site; pub 10 minutes' walk away
Steve, Alex and the family look forward to welcoming you for a taste of wild camping at Whitegate Farm Camping. Set on a smallholding on the outskirts of the pretty village of Bunbury in Cheshire, this quiet, family- and dog-friendly spot has Peckforton Hills views from the camping field – and Phoebe the friendly llama as your new neighbour. The family-run site is in the Cheshire countryside, 10 minutes' drive from Tarporley, and just a 10-minute walk to the local pub and shop. This is a lovely peaceful spot with lots of privacy, but all the same, it's under half an hour's drive away from many of Chester's popular attractions, including Chester Zoo, The Ice Cream Farm and Wild Shore Delamere. Simple on-site facilities stretch to loos and a shower, and be forewarned that there is no electricity on site; bring torches for any nocturnal wanderings about the place. What you do get, however, are loads of walks and bike rides straight from the campsite, to Beeston Castle (45 minutes on foot) or along The Sandstone Trail (50 minutes). You can take the kids on easy family strolls or cycles alongside the Shropshire Union Canal Main Line towpath (10 minutes’ drive), or have a meander down to the three local pubs within 20 minutes’ walk for a choice of good food and a decent pint or two.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: If you are looking for a lovely quiet minimalist spot to pitch a tent then Whitegate Farm will be perfect for you. The toilet /shower block, as many have said was spotless. Drinking water tap close by and a very semi wild feel which was nice. My contact was Alex, who was very welcoming and helpful throughout the entire stay.

Disliked: The only thing that I envisage as being a potential issue is that the toilet and shower was not gender specific, and only one of each. If it was a little busier it could generate a queue, and potentially be a little awkward. That said with the size and nature of the campsite and with the number of campers on the day it was perfectly adequate.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely brilliant campsite - spacious, clean and picturesque. We were amazed by how spotless the toilet and shower area was, the tidy bins, the attention to detail and the kind hosts who settled us in beautifully and went on to even lend us a fire pit to ensure we had the full ‘camp fire’ experience for our children. Can confidently recommend Whitegate Farm and hope to return again soon!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Site clean & tidy. The owners were lovely, came around to greet their guests. Good location, walked to Beeston castle from the site & also a pub not too far away. Would definitely visit again! 😊

Disliked: No hot water in the toilet/shower facilities when using the sink. Also when the site got busier with guests I think the site could benefit from another toilet/shower facility as it often got crowded with only having one shower & one toilet. I know the site is new so something to consider for the future.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We loved our trip to Whitegate Farm - it had everything we needed! We felt very safe and comfortable and the experience was very stress free. Easy to find, super clean shower & toilet, beautiful surroundings. We went for a lovely walk to Dysart Arms (around half an hour away) but there were also shorter walks to more local pubs. We also visited Beeston castle which was under a 10 min drive from the campsite. The perfect campsite for our first time camping. Thank you!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful site, owner friendly, came and introduced herself, I had a nice and peaceful, (first night) a decent size pitch, place surrounded with a tall hedge, but had some nice views, surrounded by fields and some lovely walks to reach the castle. 10 mins from a pub and little village. Shower block and toilet, clean and usable.

Disliked: Cold water site, at the pot washing area & Sinks in toilet block. For me sadly, it's not Adult only. (Should be) Young children allowed. But no facilities/play area for the children to play and had a child with constant screaming tantrums for one of the days.

Local attractions

Younger kids may not give you any peace until you’ve taken them to The Ice Cream Farm (15 minutes’ drive) to sample more than 40 flavours of homemade ice cream and have a run around at the play area. The elephants, tigers and giraffes at Chester Zoo (half an hour) are likely to be second on the list, or you can go diving with sharks at Blue Planet Aquarium (35 minutes). Take the whole family to test their mettle on the zipwires and treetop rope courses at BeWILDerwood Cheshire (10 minutes’ drive), or make for the inflatable climbing course at Wild Shore Delamere waterpark (20 minutes), where you can also take wakeboarding and paddleboarding lessons. For far-reaching views to the Peckforton Hills, climb up to Beeston Castle (45 minutes’ walk) on its rocky crag. Have an urban day out among the indie shops, Roman walls and Tudor half-timbered buildings of Chester, and if you’re bargain hunting, browse the fashion shops at Designer Outlet Cheshire Oaks (both 35 minutes’ drive).
