  • Family-friendly site in scenic Pennines surroundings
  • Bar on site open Friday and Saturday; firepits and logs for hire
  • Traditional camping experience on the outskirts of Hebden Bridge
Mad about walking? Then you’d be silly to miss out on Aarons Campsite – the Cragg Vale location, between Halifax and Hebden Bridge, is right in the heart of the lush green Pennines, where heading out for a wander can turn into a full-blown hike that ranks up there with the best of them. The secluded family-friendly site, in an area of moors and fields, is within easy reach of local attractions such as the popular tourist town of Hebden Bridge. The surrounding hills and valleys (including Stoodley Pike) have been popular with trekking types for yonks too, whether for strolling along a riverside path, or for following stone causeways marking old packhorse routes. There's great dog-walking terrain in all directions too. It’s all about the relaxing back to basics camping experience here, but just have a chat with the staff and they’ll provide you with portable firepits and wood for your campfire (for a small extra charge) – they also have a larger fixed campfire available for group hire. The easily accessible fields are flat and drained. If you’re out of nosh or fancy leaving the cooking to someone else one evening, the site has a food shack and bar on site open on Fridays and Saturdays, where you can tuck into bacon butties and local brewed ales. But if you’re out in the car on a food mission, be sure to grab some bits for the barbecue and invite some of your newfound friends over for a evening meal.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: From the owner to the guy that brings round the wood we were warmly welcomed. Open mic and band night on Fri was ace and the wee pub is brilliant, serves local vocation beer on draught too. Reasonably priced. Fire pit, kindling, firelighters and a huge bag wood is only 15 quid.

Disliked: Toilets are very rustic and could do with tlc

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The location is brilliant with great facilities. A bar with live music on a weekend which I think needs to be made more clear as it seems very busy and full of party goers…. I will be willing to stay again but during the week. A lot of people didn’t sleep too well in the quiet field due to drunken lads. The the sun set was absolutely beautiful and staff are great. Great value for money but I just prefer not been woken up by people partying and not respecting other peoples peace. But like I say I’m definitely willing to try again during the week. X

Disliked: The quiet field isn’t quiet or staffed for noise levels meaning a group of young lads (6 of them) kept a lot of people awake all night. Groups of 3 or more lads are not allowed as per the website rules for the campsite… don’t think I’ll return on a weekend if it’s a party site….. it should be made clear on the website that weekends are busy and people party.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Only the view.

Disliked: This was without doubt the worst site we have ever stayed on. Arrived and the man who meet us (never told us his name) had no record of our booking!! Wrote down my details in a tatty book. The only thing he was bothered about was giving me a card so I could book direct next time. Never informed us were everything was on the site and no wonder. I knew it was basic when I booked but I couldn’t have imagined what I had booked. Just 3 portaloo’s, 1 small sink to wash pots in (very dirty) a tap next to it for water. This was all next to an open shed full of rubbish. Never found a chemical disposal point, if they actually had one. All this for a very reasonable charge of £30 for 1 night. The man should have worn a mask and had stripy jumper on!!!! Pitchup should remove this site off their books.

From the manager: It's a shame that you didn't enjoy your stay, We are mystified by your complaint, which as you can see from the majority of other reviews here and elsewhere is not consilient with most other campers' experiences. There are many inaccuracies in your review. We at no point said that we didn't have a record of your booking, and we wouldn't have said that. When guests turn up, they sometimes want to sign in with a member of staff who does not have immediate access to our computer system, and who may be engaged on other tasks, so we ask to see their booking email and take note of their reference number in a bookings ledger for when we are at a computer. On this particular day in question, there was a local power cut and our system was offline in any case, which we carefully explained to every camper who booked in, including yourselves. We would never tell a camper that we had no record of their booking if this was not the case, and we wouldn't allow them to stay unless we knew they had paid upfront. There are two drinking water/washing points, one of which is next to the shed where we keep our cardboard recycling - not rubbish - for collection, so it is kept clean and dry. These sinks are both outside and subject to the elements, but they are categorically not left dirty. We have a total of six portaloos, and two permanent toilet blocks. All are clearly marked and signposted and on the main paths near to the camping areas. We also offer a food shack with hot and cold food, a pizza kitchen, and a full bar on site. We are puzzled at your assertion that we somehow don't provide enough amenities to justify the very reasonable prices we charge to stay on our well-tended land with beautiful views, that has been proudly stewarded by our family for generations. If you paid £30 then it must have been for at least two adults and dogs or a child. There are not many campsites cheaper than this. Our staff are always available, approachable, friendly and happy to help. It's such a shame that you saw fit to be insulting and accusatory in your inaccurate review. Most people absolutely love our site and their stays here.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Been coming to Aaron’s for around 5 years now, the campsite has massively upgraded over this time and is a wonderful place! They have an outside bar, also cook pizza too ! They also offer breakfast in the mornings. Ideal for kids and adults or even a group of friends, no amplified music is aloud so noise is to a minimum which is great. 10 / 10 lovely place.

Disliked: No showers on site.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Back to basic, non electric. But plenty of space for pitch. Fire pit delivered with logs for small fee. Cafe and little shack pub on site to. Toilets available. Ideal and local enough to be there in half hour. Great fun and laughs with friends.

Disliked: Only thing is that field could do with a grass cut

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Easy going, back to basic basic and small site. Good options between field or trees to pitch Friendly staff

Disliked: None of the lights along the paths or toilets worked on an evening but we’re on in the morning. Regardless you still can’t see anything when the toilet door is closed. The easy going nature of the place can lead to breaking of the so called rules….cars parked by tents so less space meant more campers in the centre of the field which is fine but meant less space for kids to play. Others played music, again not a problem but don’t set rules, put them everywhere then just let people break them!!!

Local attractions

Cragg Vale, a 10-minute drive away, is a top spot to delve into local history and is crammed with independent shops for souvenirs and wallet emptying, from antiques and secondhand books to handmade quality crafts. There's more shopping, along with Victorian streets and a hillside setting, at Hebden Bridge (20 minutes' drive), frequently hailed as one of the best market towns in the UK and Europe. Check out the town events when you're here too, as Hebden Bridge is home to an acclaimed arts festival and the famed Handmade Parade. Hikers can ramble around all sorts of walking havens from here, with the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland both within an hour's drive for weeks' worth of contented tramping about. Or have a highly energetic time closer to home with a clamber up to Stoodley Pike, commemorating the Battle of Waterloo. There are splendid views of green countryside from here, so bring your camera. Brontë buffs might also want to check out the ruined farmhouse Top Withens (45 minutes), said to have been the inspiration for the Earnshaw home in Wuthering Heights. The surrounding moors are sure to have you searching for the nearest bookshop, or perhaps bawling out a certain Kate Bush song from the 70s…
