  • Family-owned wild camping site eight miles from Newcastle upon Tyne
  • A 10-minute drive from Metrocentre; 30 minutes from Derwent Reservoir
  • Barbecues and dogs permitted; small woodland area; pubs nearby
Whether it’s tracing Hadrian’s Wall, clip and climbing at a local entertainment complex or windsurfing and open-water swimming around a reservoir, you’ll be able to pack together a pretty dandy break from Stampley Moss Farm. Eight miles from Newcastle upon Tyne, the city lights are just 20 minutes’ drive away, but water-based relaxation is also within reach, whether at the coast (35 minutes’ drive) or Derwent Reservoir (half an hour). Four-legged friends are welcome on a lead here and they’ll have a small private forest to stretch their legs. The woodlands circle the pop-up pitches, where it’s fully wild with no electricity and no facilities other than a portable toilet and cold tap (although you’ll be welcome to get a toasty vibe going with a barbecue). There’s a pile of chopped firewood in the field to help yourself to if you'd like to make a firepit (just be careful with the fire). The family-owned farm is friendly, that’s for sure, so once you’re all settled in, you’ll be ready to brace for take-off. Those of you who are after a foodie plunge first will find pubs and restaurants within five minutes’ drive of the site. And when you’re ready to march off into the horizon in search of wildlife, there are red kite zones locally or the river Derwent’s under half an hour’s walk away. With Gateshead’s Metrocentre 10 minutes’ drive away too, you’ll really be in a prime spot for a shop-till-you-drop afternoon or perhaps a clip and climb, cinema or miniature golf showdown. There's a lovely pond on site with ducks and geese, so guests should keep children safe and away from the pond. Also, take note that the security gate is locked at 10pm, so it's not possible to enter or exit after this time. If there's space left over, you are welcome to park your car on your pitch.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great little site for that real wild camping experience. Camp fires and barbecue s allowed. I stayed 2 nights with my disabled son he had a great time easy car access straight to the pitch of choice limited spots so really quite and tranquil with a little wooded area to pitch up in to if that's what your after. No showers or on site loo blocks 1 porta loo in main car park but given the small site it wasn't a issue for us .fully electric security gates and car registration camera entry so very secure. With lots of shopping and local wild life within 15 minutes driving , it's the perfect little get away spot for those get aways .

Disliked: I honestly didn't dislike anything about the site it was camp fire and barbecue s allowed with caution used and respect and it was great for that wild camping experience.

Liked: This was a great spot! I needed a safe spot to stop with my kids for the night in our camper. The communication from the owner was fantastic, I got detailed instructions on where to go by text so contacting them was easy and straightforward. The camping field was huge with plenty of options to park. We parked next to a fire pit and my son had a great time making a fire. Our dog was able to run and loved it there. The toilet in the car park was clean and had plenty of supplies. My son said it’s the best smelling portaloo he’d ever been in! For £20 this was perfect, we were safe, able to stretch our legs and loved that check out time was 11am so I got to sleep in and have breakfast before starting the onward journey. The site is right by the A1 but it was lovely and quiet and we all slept really well and jumped back on the motorway the next morning. Thanks for your hospitality, we loved it here!

Disliked: Nothing - it was exactly what it said in the advert!

Disliked: Not being allowed to use a gazebo .. we travel in a day van .. no cooking indoors so we usually set up gazebo to cook in also we have a pop up toilet (medical issues for myself) and use that but without gazebo for a bit privacy i couldnt use

Liked: Convenient location

Disliked: Not very clean around the field. Bins overflowing to the point that there was a very large pile of trash around them. Only a single portaloo.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Very sorry you feel that way . There was 2 bins one small wheely bin with recycling on it so not sure where that’s gone . Every day we empty the bins with the quad & trailer so very sorry . I can’t buy another portaloo as it’s a new regulation to have one on a wild camping field and the cost of two and it’s professional servicing means the field wouldn’t be worth while but I am sorry you feel this way

Local attractions

What was life like in past times around here? Well, for a whizz back to the Roman era, Heddon-on-the-Wall (15 minutes’ drive) and Corbridge Roman Town (25 minutes) are both a short drive away, where you’ll get to see excavation collections, Roman armour and trinkets, as well as the remains of the 73-mile Roman wall. The 1820s to the 1950s are in focus at Beamish, the Living Museum of the North (20 minutes). This place is an open-air museum, so you’ll get to join in with activities here or just have a look around. There are old colliery railway tracks for walking and cycling at Chopwell Woodland Park (10 minutes) but Go Ape Matfen takes things to the treetops (25 minutes) for more daring obstacle courses and zipwires. Water’s surely got to feature in your break too, as the coast is just over half an hour’s drive away. At Seaham beach (35 minutes), perhaps you’ll want to search for sea glass or pull out all the stops for a picnic on the shore, followed by a pretty promenade walk. Derwent Reservoir (half an hour) is another place that's all about the water, whether it’s fishing lessons, open-water swimming, sailing or windsurfing.
