  • Off-grid family site and fishery 15 minutes’ drive from Doncaster
  • Yorkshire Sculpture Park 45 minutes’ drive; Royal Armouries 50 minutes
  • Wildlife haven with fishing lakes and communal firepits for barbecues
Like the sound of combining a fishing holiday with a stay at a wildlife haven? That’s exactly what you can do at Willow Garth Country Park and Fishery, an eco site focused on community and education, just 15 minutes’ drive away from the modern-day conveniences of Doncaster. Surrounded by farmland, this long-established retreat space has a myriad of birds and wildlife. You'll get to stay beside three woodland lakes at the site's private fishery, which is well-stocked with carp, tench, pike and perch. Whether you arrive here to fish or simply sit by the water's edge, you're very welcome. Either way, you can take long walks – with any accompanying dogs – straight from your pitch or grill up a barbecue on communal firepits. And on clear nights, you may well see spectacular sunsets over the lakes. This being an ecologically sound, off-grid sort of place, there is no electricity available, but there is a chill-out zone with a hammock and sunloungers outside reception.

What customers say

Idyllic spot for quiet, off-grid camping by lovely fishing lakes. Staff are dead on, atmosphere peaceful, and loads of wildlife. Facilities are basic but grand, with compost loos & an outdoor kitchen. Train noise is a bit much at times, but the peace wins out. Perfect for a chill break.

Non-electric forest floor tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Beautiful fishing lakes completely off grid, I was given a place in island in the middle with fellow campers. Parked next to tent facing back lake. Made to feel very welcome from staff, compost toilets short walk away. Paths around whole side with eco building and outside kitchen and group fire circle. Allowed to use my own fire pit, wood and fuel brought from site for a tenner, even lent me a lighter as forgot mine. Slept great little noise apart from occasional train and church bells

Disliked Having to leave and not having a week here

Non-electric forest floor motorhome pitch

Liked Willow Garth was great, the site is eco friendly, scenic and had character with the pitches spaced naturally rather than just rows of them cheek by jowl. There's fishing on site for those who fish and wildlife including Moorhens, Canada geese and chickens. A communal table was close to my pitch for campers who may want to integrate and socialise. It made cooking alot easier too.

Non-electric forest floor tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked All the staff/volunteers are super friendly and helpful. Everything they earn whether it's camping fees or stuff sold in their cute lil shop all goes back into making the site better. Which is just fantastic. They have loads of adopted animals on site too. We will definitely be returning several times and helping out make this place even better for everyone else to enjoy.

Local attractions

Looking for gentle family strolls? Situated on a former colliery, Bentley Community Woodland (five minutes’ drive) provides a splash of green among the suburbs of Doncaster, with woodland walks and cycling trails around the reservoir. There are more peaceful hikes to be had at Thorpe Marsh Nature Reserve, or you can meander around the manicured grounds at Georgian-era Cusworth Hall Museum and Park (both 10 minutes). If the kids are getting restless, take them to jump around at Go Bounce Extreme Trampoline Park (15 minutes), or go extreme on the endurance trails at Uncle Eddies Motocross Park (five minutes). When quieter sports are called for, there are several golf courses within 20 minutes’ drive, and if you’d rather someone else put in all the effort, Doncaster Racecourse (15 minutes) has a year-round schedule of racing. There are several big-hitting attractions nearby too: have a potter around the ever-changing outdoor installations at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (45 minutes), or admire vast collections of armour and watch jousting sessions at the Royal Armouries (50 minutes). A little further afield, you can visit the museums and minster in York, or The Deep aquarium in Hull (both around an hour).
