  • View of Dunstanburgh Castle from the pitches; golf course next door
A camping holiday in Northumberland is always a good idea, but one at Dunstan Steads Camping is even better – as it’s practically on spectacular Embleton Bay, a sandy sweep of sand edging the North Sea that’s popular for long walks, rook pooling and surfing (the latter when conditions are right). Staying at this scenic pop-up site also means you can wake up every day to views of the ruins of stately Dunstanburgh Castle, just a few minutes’ walk away along the newly named King Charles III England Coast Path. Set between the picture-perfect coastal villages of Craster (10 minutes’ drive) and Embleton (five minutes), the site makes a great base for exploring the stunning Northumberland coastline, giving you easy access to sandy beaches, scenic walking trails, historic castles (Alnwick is 20 minute by car) – and local pubs too. There are spacious, neatly mown grass pitches at Dunstan Stead, but beyond that the list of facilities is somewhat short. There are portable toilets on the side of the neatly mown camping field but no showers or electricity; you’ll have a back-to-basics traditional camping experience where you can relax far away from the bustle of everyday life.

Local attractions

As well as having direct access to the golden sands at Embleton Bay (five minutes’ walk), Dunstanburgh Castle (20 minutes) and the golf course that lies at its feet, Dunstan Steads is well placed for exploring North Northumberland. The many attractions of Alnwick Castle (20 minutes’ drive) include its well-known Poison Garden and Lilidorei, a vast themed adventure playground guaranteed to keep younger kids entertained. Bamburgh Castle (25 minutes) is open for self-guided tours of its staterooms, medieval kitchen and ornate Victorian-era King’s Hall; afterwards you can walk for miles on the expansive neighbouring beach. You can also join a boat trip from Seahouses (20 minutes) to the Farne Islands, famed for their colonies of puffins, guillemots and grey seals. A little further afield is the Holy Island of Lindisfarne (45 minutes); you’ll need to check the tide times before driving over the causeway to this little treasure trove of an island with an ancient priory and 16th-century castle – redesigned by Sir Edwin Lutyens in the 1900s – to explore, as well as a number of walks on the dunes and beaches around the island.
