  • Well-kept Northumberland pop-up site 150 metres from Embleton Bay
  • Alnwick Castle and Seahouses 20 minutes’ drive; Lindisfarne 45 minutes
  • View of Dunstanburgh Castle from the pitches; golf course next door
A camping holiday in Northumberland is always a good idea, especially if it's at Dunstan Steads Camping – this site is a mere 150 metres from spectacular Embleton Bay, a sandy sweep of sand edging the North Sea that’s popular for long walks, rookpooling and surfing (the latter when conditions are right). Staying at this scenic pop-up site also means you can wake up every day to views of the ruins of stately Dunstanburgh Castle, just a few minutes’ walk away along the newly named King Charles III England Coast Path. Set between the pretty coastal villages of Craster (10 minutes’ drive) and Embleton (five minutes), the site makes a great base for exploring the stunning Northumberland coastline, giving you easy access to sandy beaches, scenic walking trails, historic castles (Alnwick is 20 minutes away by car) – and local pubs too. It's also a wonderful location for wildlife spotting – a nearby nature reserve has great birdwatching, and there are colourful butterflies and wildflowers in the dunes. Throughout the season you may also spot roe deer, seals and dolphins nearby, plus all manner of birds from puffins to herons and barn owls. There are spacious, neatly mown grass pitches at Dunstan Stead, but beyond that the list of facilities is somewhat short. There are portable toilets on the side of the neatly mown camping field but no showers or electricity; you’ll have a back-to-basics traditional camping experience where you can relax far away from the bustle of everyday life.

What customers say

Cracking coastal spot, close to a lovely beach and Dunstanburgh Castle. Peaceful, with loads of wildlife and handy for villages and pubs. Toilets are grand. Some had bother with water/waste in July, but a tap's been added since. Plenty of room, but a bit rough and wild for some.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked A lovely and quiet, picturesque spot a minute from the beach, 10 from the castle and 15 from embleton! Gorgeous views of the castle and a lovely walk to Craster and beyond at your fingertips!

The farmer was very clear on there being no running water and only toilets, which were spotless, so it is not a downside!

Would reccomend! Thankyou!

Disliked Nothing!

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Great scenery very close to the beach and only 5 min drive to the village the 4 toilets were cleaned everyday spot on

Disliked Grass could do with cutting more and put code on toilets to stop people who aren't camping from climbing over the gate to use them.could do with some gravel putting down in the entrance other than that its a good place

Local attractions

As well as having direct access to the golden sands at Embleton Bay (five minutes’ walk), Dunstanburgh Castle (20 minutes) and the golf course that lies at its feet, Dunstan Steads is well placed for exploring north Northumberland. The many attractions of Alnwick Castle (20 minutes’ drive) include its well-known Poison Garden and Lilidorei, a vast themed adventure playground to keep younger kids entertained. Bamburgh Castle (25 minutes) is open for self-guided tours of its staterooms, medieval kitchen and ornate Victorian-era King’s Hall; afterwards you can walk for miles on the expansive neighbouring beach. You can also join a boat trip from Seahouses (20 minutes) to the Farne Islands, famed for their colonies of puffins, guillemots and grey seals. A little further afield is the Holy Island of Lindisfarne (45 minutes); you’ll need to check the tide times before driving over the causeway to this little treasure trove of an island with an ancient priory and 16th-century castle – redesigned by Sir Edwin Lutyens in the 1900s – to explore, as well as a number of walks on the dunes and beaches around the island.
