  • Scenic family-run farm site in the North York Moors National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Runswick Bay; 20 minutes from Whitby
  • Vending machine with pies, sandwiches, cakes and milkshakes
From setting sail from a local harbour and paddling down at the beach to riding steam trains and wandering round abbey ruins, you’ll be able to mix and match your activities around North Yorkshire’s countryside and coastline at Woodhill Camping. This family-run site is part of a working livestock and arable farm in the North York Moors National Park, 10 minutes’ drive away from Runswick Bay and 20 minutes from Whitby. The location here is a real selling point – as well as seaside jaunts, there are lots of lovely walking and cycling routes in the surrounding area. There are gorgeous views of the moors, hills and dales too… and yet it’s only about half a mile from the A171 for a convenient link to nearby attractions. And there's another selling point, in the form of the on-site vending machines. These are not your everyday vending machines, though… these ones can provide you with pies, sandwiches, milkshakes, cakes and fresh milk, plus hot drinks. There are also farm eggs and potatoes for sale (and you can get fizzy drinks and chocolate bars too if you want). Ice creams or seafood specialties on your brain? Well, this site is well positioned for more tasty local produce. Lealholm is five minutes’ drive away, with a café, pub and village shop (and some cute stepping stones) and there are several more pubs within 10 minutes’ drive of the site. Dirty plates after all these eating escapades? There’s a covered washing-up area on site. Other facilities include toilets and showers.

What customers say

A quiet, big site with flat pitches around the field's edge, leaving loads of room for kids to play in the middle. Facilities are usually clean and well-kept, with popular vending machines for drinks. Liz, the owner, is dead sound and helpful. Some say showers are a bit scarce and it can get windy, but it's brilliant value and a great spot for seeing the sights.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely big site, good sized pitches, good location, nice flat ground. Liz was very friendly and accomodating. Would definitely come back

Disliked My only dislike was that there was only 1 shower for the women and 1 for the men. Just also very cramed when people are brushing their teeth etc and having to keep the main door open was not very private when people were queueing

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The pitches were large and spread out, the centre of the field was free for children to play, excellent views, pitches were nice and flat, facilities very clean.

Disliked A group were laughing and talking very loudly after 12am, obviously weren't aware of quiet time or other people trying to sleeo
Only one shower,

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely little campsite, all the tents pitched round the field and a lovely big space in the middle for kids to play, was the first time taking our kids camping so was worried they would get bored but there was lots of families there with kids, has everything you need for a short stay including a washing up area and 2 fridge freezers for ice blocks and alcohol, also can hire wind breakers and camp fires cheap and liz was very helpful lending us some pegs when we were short

Disliked Nothing we had a lovely 2 night break

Ash bell tent (six person)

Liked We stayed in the 6 person bell tent which was huge. Liz was lovely and very helpful. Would defiantly stay again (with earplugs next time). Kitchen sink facilities and the vending machines are a great addition (could do with a wine option)

Disliked The toilet and shower are a bit close together with signs with instructions that the main door is to be kept open making you feel abit exposed. States on pitch up that there is no noise or car movement after 9pm till 9am but this isn't enforced as we had a very scruffy man F'ing and Jeffing at his children till 1am then again at 5am when they very loudly packed the car up and left after leaving the engine running for an hour 1st.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely level pitch, nice facilities (could do with more showers) vending machine is next level epic. Facilities were very clean at all times.

Disliked Some people allowing children to run around screaming at midnight wasn’t great, that’s more a guest issue than a site problem.

Oak bell tent (two person)

Liked The vending machines are very handy and the site allows fire pits too
Very helpful owners
Close to Egton which was needed for the show

Disliked The site is on a farm. Machinery is loud on a morning (7am) especially when feeding
Sheep surrounding the site are loud all through the night so sleep was interrupted
Only one shower per block (male and female) so queueing on a morning (8 am onwards)

Local attractions

To the coast… Runswick Bay (10 minutes' drive) is a good place to start – this cute village has a scenic beach with space for swimming, fishing and crabbing, plus consistent waves for the surfers among you. Sandsend and Staithes are both 15 minutes’ drive away, or it's 20 minutes to Whitby, for the abbey ruins and the 199 Steps, plus boat trips and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Looking a little further afield, you could head along the coast a bit more to Scarborough (40 minutes) for a waterpark, Sea Life Centre and another steam railway, or turn inland to explore Malton (50 minutes), often described as Yorkshire’s food capital. For family days out, try the likes of Flamingo Land Resort (40 minutes), with a theme park and zoo, or Eden Camp Modern History Museum (50 minutes), bringing the history of World War II to life with exhibits in a former prisoner of war camp.
