Approach to the site

  • Adults-only site in the centre of Thorganby village
  • A 25-minute drive to York or 35 minutes to Castle Howard
  • Bus stop nearby for services to York
An easy pace of country living is the essence of this adults-only site in rural North Yorkshire. Country Living Campsite is in a top location in the centre of Thorganby village, an attractive spot with direct bus services into York city centre (Monday to Saturday; please note that there is no bus service on bank holidays). The site has a limited number of pitches and only adults are allowed, so the whole place has a quiet, relaxed vibe that's great for laidback country holidays. Settle into this slower pace of rural life by taking a walk on one of the many footpaths that crisscross the local countryside or by simply sitting back and appreciating the open views, wildlife and spectacular sunsets. If you’re minded to travel further afield, this site is within easy reach of major routes, so you can easily access destinations like York (25 minutes' drive), Castle Howard (35 minutes), the North York Moors National Park (50 minutes), and Yorkshire's gorgeous east coast (an hour and five minutes).

Non-electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: The site is small, simple and with all the basic things you’ll need. One toilet, one shower, chemical toilet disposal, water, bins, and outdoor washing up area. There are 6 pitches with electric hook up and 6 without. All have gravel hard standing and grass and are level. The owner gave helpful instructions for self check in and we chose from the available non-electric pitches. We chose the end pitch and reversed in so we had an unobstructed view of the adjoining fields. Lovely. It’s a very peaceful site which overlooks fields and trees. Ideal if you want a quiet escape. We really like adult only and smaller sites for that reason. We met the owner later on and she was very friendly and helpful. Recommended and this is on our list of places we would happily return to.

Disliked: Nothing. The facilities were limited but clean, tidy, and exactly as described.

Liked: Sehr nette Besitzerin die sich sehr viel Mühe mit ihren Gästen macht. Sehr ruhiger Platz in sehr schöner Lage

Disliked: Eine Toilette und eine Dusche ist etwas wenig. Besonders während dem Bank Feiertag

From the manager: English August Bank holiday is a busy weekend which I think caught you by surprise? Ratio of 18 people to one shower and one loo is not bad going for this busy weekend though!

Electric optional grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet site. Well maintained and very friendly and helpful owner. Nearby walks of varying distances. There is only one shower but it was very clean and of a decent size. No local shop or pub to go to but we towed our car behind the MH so we could explore. There was information about the local bus service

Liked: Site was nice and quiet, plus easy to find.

Disliked: Pity the local pub has closed, but nothing the site owner can do about that. Few improvements I'd suggest is for the outside sink reduce the size of it way too big, plus the hot water kept going on and off so you end up wasting more water than using. Shower head probably could do with changing as it's not very fast and you find you have to hold it just so it gets water on your full body. Big improvement needed in this area, the place where you empty the chemical disposal point is far by the worse I've every used, usaully this is a toilet or open drain with a lid on it, where you have to open one of the holes on the full septic tank which gives you the awful view of what's in there, this isn't what I wanted to see at all and the small is awful. I get charging for electric, but as long as you don't see people using loads I'd keep it included.

From the manager: I have just returned from site to get feedback re the shower as i was concerned it was malfunctioning. All i spoke to said they were happy with its output but also pointed out that it is rare to find a shower without a button to press or money to pay and as much hot water as you need. If you had struggled it would have been wise to contact me at the time to find out if there was a problem with it? You had a quick response when you sent txts regarding the bus so no reason to not have rung or txt if problem with shower or when you saw me on site? The sink is big because the idea of it is to put your own washing up bowl in it - the taps are push button to stop them being left on. Particularly the hot water, as again you dont have to pay for it. Chemical waste points are what they are nothing unusual about ours. In all the times I have opened the trap ive never seen anything but mucky water full of blue chemical. Sometimes there is an odour when its hot and the tanks are due to be emptied. Re the electric, its a lot more work for me but due to huge energy price increases it was the only way to keep pitch prices down - but you didnt message me before leaving the site to pay for yours so in effect, it was included! I make myself available either on site or via txt to ensure everyone are happy campers but you cant please all of the people all of the time.

Liked: Clean pitch, lovely location. Owner very helpful, gave great advise on where to visit.

Disliked: Washing up area not under cover and only one toilet and shower.

From the manager: We are a small. quiet site. We have one shower and one loo as we only have 6 electric pitches and 6 non electric. It is rare that the non electric pitches are full. At the point of visiting I had 3 electric pitches cancel due to the awful weather so that left 3 vans to use 1 shower and 1 toilet. I respect useful feedback and to give context, we had already looked at adding more loos and showers( including a cover for the wash area) but the cost of this came in at £15000. I cannot offer pitches as £22 a night with that type of overhead. I have resisted increasing our overheads to continue to offer people a quiet and affordable stay in a sought after village close to York where land is a premium. Some people don't see this as a premium, some do. Some value toilets, some value space, peace and wildlife. The 6 out of 10 review reflects a need for a small site to have the facilities of a large site, which is a little unfair? Particularly as the number of customers I get, this 6 out of 10 will bring my average well down for the rest of the year. Good old pitch up.

After going past the few houses at the top of the lane, look for the site entrance on the left, near a large oak tree. Please take it slowly as the lane is a no-through road and it's tricky to turn round on if you miss the entrance. (If you do miss the entrance you will need to continue for about a mile then use the track at the end to turn around.)

Local attractions

The biggest boon of this site is its quiet countryside location coupled with its proximity to transport connections that take you out to some of North Yorkshire's best spots. Historic York has a fab café culture and packed cultural events calendar, and is also a particularly tiptop spot for those holidaymakers who are partial to an abundance of old buildings, monuments and museums. Learn about Vikings at the Jorvik Centre, take a wander around the National Railway Museum or visit the country's biggest independent air museum; York Minster and York Castle Museum are another two of the city's absolute must-sees. Outside York, both Harrogate and Leeds are around an hour’s drive away from Country Living Campsite and jam-packed with historic highlights and a lot of independent local shops and restaurants. Castle Howard can be reached within just over half an hour too. Towards Hull, immerse yourself in the exhibits of award-winning aquarium, The Deep, where seven species of shark swim among the countless other sea creatures that roam the centre's numerous aquarium tanks.
